Start with RuneScape if you want a modern MMO with a broad progression system and the option to adjust combat and interface settings. Start with Old School RuneScape (OSRS) if its retro style, challenging levelling, high-stakes PvP and community-influenced development are what you want. Neither is established as objectively easier for beginners. Both let you start for free; membership unlocks substantial additional content in each.

Choose RuneScape for flexible modern systems
RuneScape is a sensible first choice if you want to explore a broad skill and quest offering and would like some control over how combat and the interface feel. Jagex’s guide lists 29 skills, and its combat settings let you choose between Evolution of Combat and Legacy options. Those choices offer flexibility within RuneScape; they do not reproduce OSRS.
Choose OSRS for the retro experience
Pick OSRS if the older-school presentation is part of the appeal, and you want the challenge of levelling and the possibility of risk-it-all PvP. Jagex’s homepage describes the game as “the biggest retro styled MMO” and foregrounds those features. Jagex also characterizes OSRS development as community-controlled, so it is a fit if that approach to change matters to you.
Don’t choose on an assumed difficulty ranking
There is no supported beginner-onboarding comparison that establishes one game as easier or faster to learn. Jagex’s description of OSRS emphasizes challenging levelling, but that is not a measured comparison with RuneScape. Choose based on which game’s style and systems sound appealing, then try its free entry before deciding whether to commit further.

Can you play either game for free?
Yes. Jagex presents RuneScape as free-to-play, and both games offer entry without membership. Membership opens substantial additional content: Jagex advertises extra regions, 12 exclusive skills and 45 members-only bosses for RuneScape, while its support page describes subscriptions as unlocking the full world and exclusive content across both eras.

Choose the game before buying a Bond
Old School Bonds are for OSRS. Jagex says they can be traded within OSRS and redeemed for membership, but cannot be transferred to RuneScape to use for RuneCoins or Keys. Decide which game you want before purchasing a Bond or membership. Jagex Support: Old School Bonds

No. They share the RuneScape setting, Gielinor, but Jagex presents them as distinct game eras with their own experiences and membership routes. RuneScape’s Legacy settings can adjust its combat and interface; they do not turn it into OSRS. OSRS has its own retro identity and community-influenced development.

- Pick the experience you want. Choose RuneScape for its modern systems and configurable combat and interface, or OSRS for its retro presentation and challenging levelling.
- Try the free entry first. See which game’s experience you actually enjoy before paying for membership.
- Check the right membership route. Review the current plan and platform checkout for the game you chose; do not assume prices or billing terms are identical.
- Buy only game-specific items. In particular, Old School Bonds stay within OSRS and cannot be transferred to RuneScape.
