Its contributions differ by game and platform, from RE7’s VR development to the Resident Evil 2 remake’s more detailed 3D environments and Resident Evil Requiem’s reported path tracing and strand-based hair.
What is RE ENGINE?
A game engine is the software foundation developers use to build and run a game. Capcom describes RE ENGINE as a multi-platform engine that supports work such as rendering, editing, playtesting, and quality control. It is not a consumer development product or an engine used only for Resident Evil: Capcom’s 2025 integrated report said all of its titles were then being developed with it, across genres including horror, fighting, and hunting games. The “RE” does not mean “Resident Evil.” Capcom says it represents “Reach for the Moon,” an expression of the company’s ambition for the technology. Capcom Online Integrated Report 2025
How does it help Capcom make games?
RE ENGINE is more than a graphics renderer. Capcom presents it as a shared production environment: teams can work with common tools and reuse assets between titles, while engine developers collaborate with individual game teams on requested functions and customizations. Capcom says this approach improves efficiency, but its report does not provide a controlled comparison with other studios or engines.

That workflow can support varied projects without making every game identical. The engine team adapts tools to a title’s needs; the resulting capabilities and visual techniques depend on the game and the hardware it targets. Capcom’s 2025 report put the R&D Foundational Technology Department at approximately 200 engineers, around 160 of whom worked on engine development. Why did Capcom create it with Resident Evil 7?
Capcom developed RE ENGINE alongside Resident Evil 7 biohazard, released in 2017. In a 2016 developer interview, lead programmer Tomofumi Ishida said the engine Capcom had been using was not sufficient for the realistic world the team wanted to create, so the engine and game were built together. For RE7, Capcom cited detailed materials and characters, including object textures and airborne dust, as well as high-resolution graphics for VR development at 60 frames per second. The team also used 3D scanning to create realistic characters. These were Capcom’s descriptions of a specific project, not guarantees about every RE ENGINE game or platform. In the same interview, Ishida said testing program changes took 90% less time in the RE ENGINE workflow; that figure refers specifically to that task, not game development overall. Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth mainline entry, developed with RE ENGINE and released on February 27, 2026. How do RE ENGINE’s lighting techniques differ?
Capcom’s 2025 report describes three approaches supported by RE ENGINE. They make different trade-offs in visual detail and processing cost; a technique being supported by the engine does not mean it is enabled in every game or on every platform.
- Light probes: Pre-calculated lighting with lower processing cost. Capcom notes that visual quality can suffer for dynamic objects or light sources.
- Ray tracing: Calculates direct light and some reflections in real time, including in dynamic spaces, at a higher processing cost than light probes.
- Path tracing: Statistically traces light paths through a scene, allowing complex indirect light, reflections, and refraction, but requiring substantially more computation than ray tracing.
For Requiem, Capcom says path tracing renders multiple shadows from fluctuating light sources. It also describes strand hair, which treats hair as individual strands that move with facial expressions and character motion. What players actually see can depend on platform, hardware, and settings; Capcom’s description does not establish that every version uses the same configuration. Capcom Online Integrated Report 2025

Is RE ENGINE being replaced by REX?
Capcom says it is developing REX as a next-generation engine project while continuing to evolve RE ENGINE. Its stated plan is to introduce new technologies incrementally and let them coexist with established technology where compatible, rather than replace the current engine all at once.
