What Is GameFi and How Does Play-to-Earn Work?

GameFi uses blockchain-based assets or financial mechanisms in games. Play-to-earn rewards may be tradable, but value, withdrawal, fees, and sustainability vary by title.

GameFi is a broad term for video games that use blockchain-based assets or financial mechanisms. Play-to-earn (P2E) is one GameFi model: players may receive tokens or tradable digital items for gameplay, achievements, or resources. Those rewards are not dependable income. Their value and whether you can withdraw them depend on the game’s rules, token economy, fees, and continued operation.

How does GameFi work?

  1. The game uses blockchain infrastructure. Some games represent items or currencies as tokens or non-fungible tokens (NFTs). CoinGecko explains that blockchain games can bring virtual items on-chain so they can be verified and traded, but a game does not have to put every asset on a blockchain. CoinGecko’s GameFi explainer describes this model.
  2. Gameplay can generate rewards. Depending on the title, players may receive tokens or assets for achievements, acquire items to sell, or gather resources that take time to obtain. Each game sets its own activities, eligibility, and reward rules; earning is not automatic simply because a game uses blockchain.
  3. A wallet may be needed to manage assets. Binance Research found that most P2E games it described required a crypto wallet. A wallet can receive or manage certain rewards, but it does not mean every asset can be transferred or exchanged for money.
  4. Trading or withdrawal depends on the game and asset. Before spending time or money, check whether transfers and withdrawals are allowed, which marketplaces or services are supported, what fees apply, and what restrictions may block a transaction.
  5. Token economics shape the reward’s value. A token’s usefulness and demand matter alongside how it is issued and distributed. A two-token design is not essential to a viable game, and incentives can undermine the experience if they are designed around speculation rather than enjoyable play.

GameFi and play-to-earn are not the same thing

GameFi describes the larger category of games using blockchain assets or financial mechanisms. P2E describes a possible reward model inside that category. A blockchain game may offer tradable assets without promising that players will earn money, and a P2E reward may have little practical value if it cannot be sold, transferred, or withdrawn on usable terms.

Think of a reward as a game asset first, not as wages. Its real-world value can change, fees may consume part of it, and the game or the market for its assets may disappear. A displayed token balance alone does not establish that you can cash out.

What can players receive—and what can they actually do with it?

Rewards can include crypto tokens or digital items such as NFTs. Some games let players trade items or tokens; others restrict transfers, require particular marketplaces, or impose withdrawal conditions. The exact answer is title-specific, so review the game’s current terms and transaction process rather than assuming that an on-chain asset is freely convertible.

  • Find out whether the asset is transferable outside the game.
  • Check withdrawal minimums, fees, supported networks, and any eligibility or location limits.
  • Confirm whether you need to buy an asset or pay a fee before you can participate or withdraw.
  • Look for the token’s actual uses and sources of demand, not just a reward rate or advertised earning potential.

Why can a P2E economy fail?

A game’s reward system needs more than new players seeking tokens. Binance Research describes P2E models whose incentives depend on a continuing influx of players and funds. If demand does not keep pace with token issuance or players leave, rewards can lose value and the game’s economy can weaken.

CoinGecko’s GameFi report says many early titles collapsed amid simplistic gameplay and unsustainable tokenomics. This is a warning about design risks, not a claim that every blockchain game has failed. A game that remains enjoyable without token rewards has a stronger reason for players to stay even when financial incentives change.

How to evaluate a GameFi title before joining

Use these checks to compare games. They assess risk and fit; they do not predict a token’s price or guarantee a return.

  1. Play without the reward: Is the core game enjoyable if the tokens or tradable items become worthless?
  2. Calculate what participation costs: Identify required purchases, recurring spending, transaction fees, and any costs to transfer or withdraw assets.
  3. Understand the token economy: Check how tokens enter circulation, what they are used for, and who or what creates demand for them.
  4. Trace the exit route: Confirm whether rewards can be withdrawn, which steps are required, and the applicable fees and restrictions.
  5. Assess security and account control: Understand how the wallet and game account are protected, how marketplace transactions work, and what happens if access is lost.
  6. Check player activity carefully: Look for current, title-specific information. Historical activity figures are not evidence of a game’s present popularity or future prospects.

What the historical activity numbers do—and do not—show

CoinGecko’s page, titled as a 2023 report and updated May 6, 2026, presents historical address-based measures. They are not verified counts of unique people or current player totals.

Measure Reported figure How to interpret it
Active participating addresses compared with GameFi’s November 2021 peak Down 57.9% to 837,000 addresses A historical on-chain address comparison, not a count of unique players or a current activity measure.
Top 20 blockchain games in 2023 685,000 average daily active addresses An address-based average for the report’s 2023 period, not a verified current player count.
Farming/mining games as of November 30, 2023 253,000 daily active addresses A historical genre figure, not a current market-size estimate.

These figures can provide context for past on-chain activity, but they cannot tell you whether a particular game is active now. CoinGecko’s historical data is not an endorsement or forecast.

Security, consumer risks, and regulation

In an April 4, 2024 report, the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned that people may lose gaming assets through hacking, account theft, scams, or unauthorized transactions. It also noted that game operators may not provide protections comparable to traditional banking and payment systems, and raised concerns about sensitive data collection and risks to younger consumers. Practices vary by game, so review account security, privacy terms, and available support before linking a wallet or sharing personal information.

Rules also depend on jurisdiction and can change. For UK context, the Financial Conduct Authority says its final cryptoasset rules and guidance, published June 30, 2026, apply to cryptoasset firms authorized under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA) on or after October 25, 2027. The FCA describes an intended regime covering trading, stablecoins, intermediation, custody, and other core activities. Whether a particular game or token is covered depends on the facts and applicable law; this UK policy timeline is not a global rule for games or players.
