PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most setups, leave PS5 resolution and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic, set HDR to On When Supported if your screen supports HDR, and enable 120 Hz Output or VRR only when both your display and game support them. These settings do different jobs, and a compatible TV, the correct HDMI port, and any receiver in the signal path all affect what the console can output.
Start with the PS5 video output settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Current Video Output Signal to see the signal reported by the connected HDMI device. For the normal setup, leave Resolution on Automatic; PlayStation Support says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution. Choose 2160p if you specifically want to configure 4K and the connected display supports it. A console capable of 4K does not guarantee that a particular display and connection will receive a 4K signal. PlayStation Support’s resolution guide explains the available choices.
If your display supports 1440p, select Test 1440p Output to check the modes available on that specific screen, including SDR or HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz and VRR. Do not assume every display supports every combination.
Set HDR for compatible games and apps
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set HDR to On When Supported if your screen supports HDR. HDR is then used for compatible games and apps, while non-HDR content remains SDR. Always On also converts non-HDR-compatible content to HDR output; it is a different behavior, not a universal picture-quality upgrade. See PlayStation Support’s HDR instructions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Run Adjust HDR in Video Output and follow the on-screen prompts for your particular display. The calibration is screen-specific; there is no single numeric setting that applies to every TV or monitor.
Enable 120 Hz, VRR, and ALLM only when supported
These options address different parts of the display chain. Their presence in the PS5 menu does not mean every game or display can use them.

| Setting | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 120 Hz Output | Enables 120 Hz video output for compatible games and displays. | Turn it on when the display and the game support the mode. It does not make an unsupported game render at a higher frame rate. |
| VRR | Lets the display’s refresh rate adjust in real time for supported combinations. | Enable it if your display and game support VRR; results vary by TV. |
| ALLM | Signals a supported TV to switch to low-latency mode while gaming. | Leave its default or automatic behavior in place when supported. The PS5 does not send the ALLM signal while a media app is running. |
PlayStation notes that VRR output can keep low-latency behavior active even when ALLM is set to Off. To fully turn ALLM off, VRR must also be off. Sony’s resolution and video-output guidance covers these options and their dependencies.
Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic unless troubleshooting
Video Transfer Rate is an output troubleshooting control, not a picture-enhancement setting. Leave it on Automatic for ordinary use. If you are diagnosing flicker or an unstable signal, Sony suggests trying -1 or -2 to limit the signal. These settings constrain available modes and colour formats:

- -1: For 4K HDR at 50/60 Hz, output uses YUV422 or YUV420.
- -2: For 4K at 50/60 Hz, output uses YUV420.
Both settings can limit some 4K modes, including 4K/120 Hz. Once the signal problem is resolved, return to Automatic if you need the full output capability.
Fix missing or unstable 4K/120 Hz output
If the PS5 shows a blank image, drops to 1080p/120 Hz, or does not offer 4K/120 Hz, work through the signal path before replacing equipment. Sony supports HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K/120 Hz output, but cautions that compatibility issues can occur as the technology transitions across the market. The HDMI 2.1 label alone does not confirm that every port supports every feature; check the display manual and the capabilities of the specific port.

- Confirm the display supports 4K/120 Hz. Check its specifications and manual, not just the HDMI version label.
- Update the display firmware. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the TV or monitor.
- Use the correct HDMI input. Some displays provide the required feature only on particular ports.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display. Temporarily remove a receiver or other intermediary that could affect the signal.
- Check PS5 output settings. Use Resolution: Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate: Automatic.
- Check the HDMI cable. Sony recommends the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A replacement is relevant only if the supplied cable is missing or the cable in use is unsuitable; it is not necessary when the supplied cable works.
These checks come from PlayStation Support’s PS5 resolution and 4K guidance.

Do not change RGB Range as a generic picture tweak. Sony advises changing it only if the HDMI device is not correctly sending RGB range information. If the image is cropped or surrounded by a black border, use Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area instead.

How the settings affect the picture
- Resolution sets the video output’s detail level; Automatic selects the highest resolution supported by the TV.
- HDR controls HDR output for supported content and whether non-HDR content is converted.
- 120 Hz Output concerns the output refresh rate for compatible games and displays.
- VRR adjusts refresh rate in real time for supported combinations.
- ALLM asks a compatible TV to use a low-latency mode during gameplay.
- Video Transfer Rate can reduce output demands while troubleshooting, at the cost of some modes and colour formats.
For any feature, check the display’s actual support, the particular HDMI port, the game, and whether an intermediary device sits between the console and screen. Sony’s resolution guide also describes model-specific features on CFI-7000 consoles, including 8K and PSSR-related options; these should not be treated as features of every PS5. Sony says 8K output requires an 8K/60 Hz display with Display Stream Compression, and VRR is disabled during 8K output. Consult the guide for model and display compatibility details.
