Linode Nanode vs Dedicated CPU for a 24/7 YouTube Loop Stream

A Nanode is a Shared CPU plan, not a separate category. Learn when it may suit a pre-encoded YouTube loop, when Dedicated CPU is safer, and how to estimate transfer.

Nanode is a Shared CPU plan, not a separate alternative to Shared CPU. For one pre-encoded, low-bitrate YouTube loop, a Nanode may be a reasonable low-cost trial if its shared CPU stays within Akamai’s guidance and the stream fits the account’s transfer allowance. If you need sustained encoding or more predictable compute, Dedicated CPU is the safer option. Neither plan label guarantees uninterrupted streaming: test the real workload before relying on it.

What “Nanode vs Shared CPU” means

Linode-branded cloud services now redirect to Akamai Cloud. In Akamai’s current catalog, Nanode is a Shared CPU instance. The comparison that matters for a 24/7 stream is therefore between a specific small Shared CPU plan and a Dedicated CPU plan—not between Nanode and Shared CPU as distinct product types.

Nanode 1 GB resources and price

Akamai lists the Nanode 1 GB at US$5 per month, with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB of transfer. The Shared CPU catalog spans 1–32 vCPUs, 1–192 GB RAM, 25–3,840 GB storage, and 1–20 TB transfer; those ranges describe the product family, not the Nanode specifically. See Akamai’s Shared CPU plans.

What Dedicated CPU changes

Shared CPU cores are shared among workloads. Akamai says short bursts to 100% are fine, but sustained usage should average below 80%. Dedicated CPU provides competition-free cores and is positioned for consistent compute; Akamai lists media transcoding among its use cases. This makes Dedicated CPU the more cautious choice when encoding or resizing video continuously, but it is not a guarantee against every network, software, or YouTube-side interruption. Dedicated plan prices and transfer allowances vary; the pricing page currently displays a G8 2-vCPU Dedicated Compute plan at US$45 per month, a reference point rather than a proven minimum for this workload. Check current options at Akamai’s pricing page.

Choose based on what the server actually does

Decision point Nanode / Shared CPU Dedicated CPU What it means for a loop stream
CPU consistency Shared cores; possible contention. Akamai recommends a sustained average below 80%. Competition-free dedicated cores; more predictable compute. Consider Dedicated when encoding load is sustained or shared-resource variation is unacceptable.
Video work A potentially suitable trial for a modest workload that runs within shared-CPU guidance. Akamai names media transcoding as a use case. Pushing a pre-encoded file without expensive transformations may be lighter than repeatedly encoding or resizing it. This is an engineering inference, not a benchmark of a particular stream or encoder.
Transfer Nanode 1 GB lists 1 TB; transfer is pooled across instances at account level. Allowance depends on the selected plan and generation. Calculate egress independently of CPU. A low-cost instance can be a poor fit if the stream’s bitrate exceeds its available transfer.
Price Nanode 1 GB is listed at US$5 per month. Prices vary; Akamai’s pricing page displays a G8 2-vCPU Dedicated Compute plan at US$45 per month. Compare each plan’s resources and transfer—not just its monthly sticker price.
Data center location Choose a region with the intended audience and network path in mind. A Linode staff response recommends considering viewer location, but does not promise a particular streaming result.

There is no independent comparative benchmark here for Nanode versus Dedicated CPU running a continuous YouTube loop. Akamai’s specifications and product guidance support a conditional decision, not a claim that either plan will hold a specific stream without buffering.

Estimate transfer before choosing a plan

Your stream’s outgoing bitrate and uptime determine egress. As a rough decimal planning conversion, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB before protocol overhead. At 4 Mbps, a continuously pushed stream is roughly 1.30 TB per 30-day month before overhead. That exceeds the Nanode 1 GB’s listed 1 TB allowance unless other instances contribute pooled transfer. Actual allowance and billing depend on current account details and region.

  1. Find the bitrate you will actually send to YouTube, rather than estimating from the source file size.
  2. Multiply that bitrate by the hours the stream will be online, then convert bits to bytes. Allow extra capacity for protocol overhead.
  3. Compare the resulting monthly estimate with the account’s pooled transfer allowance and check the plan and region shown in your account.
  4. Check current overage terms before committing. Akamai’s pricing page states an egress overage rate of US$0.005 per GB and says transfer is pooled across instances; inbound traffic is free. Verify how the current account’s regional billing applies.

Older Linode Community guidance from 2019 quoted a different overage rate. Use current Akamai pricing and account billing details rather than treating that historical figure as current.

Set up and test the loop before leaving it unattended

Use YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you select. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS ingest; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google. Supported video codecs listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio. Its bitrate recommendations differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate: for H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube lists 3 Mbps for 360p, 4 Mbps for 480p, and 14 Mbps for 1080p. Consult the live table for other settings rather than extrapolating from these examples. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  1. Confirm rights and channel readiness. Use audio and video you are entitled to stream. Check YouTube’s live-stream rules and the channel’s current eligibility and restrictions. A loop does not exempt a channel from copyright rules or YouTube’s reused-content policies.
  2. Prepare the encoder output. Choose the intended resolution and frame rate, set a supported codec and audio format, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Select RTMPS where available and use the bitrate appropriate to the chosen row in YouTube’s live table.
  3. Protect the stream key. Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio’s live-control setup into the encoder or relay. Treat it as a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots, logs, or commands shared publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the sender.
  4. Test the real loop. Start with the actual file, settings, audio, and motion you expect to run. YouTube recommends testing before going live and using a speed test to check upload bitrate. Watch YouTube’s stream health and review messages while also observing server CPU, memory, process status, and outgoing transfer.
  5. Set operational safeguards. Alert on a stopped sender, sustained CPU pressure, and transfer approaching the account allowance. If Shared CPU usage stays near or above Akamai’s under-80% sustained guidance, reduce processing load or move to a plan with more suitable compute. If egress approaches the allowance, lower the actual outgoing bitrate where acceptable or choose a plan/account arrangement with sufficient transfer.

Terms and service-policy considerations

Akamai’s Shared CPU guidance is not permission to consume a disproportionate share of host resources. Linode’s Acceptable Use Policy says users must not use shared systems in a way that unnecessarily interferes with normal operation or consumes a disproportionate share of resources. The policy also says Linode may prohibit some live-event streaming when it believes the event itself risks violating the policy. That excerpt does not establish that an ordinary, authorized YouTube loop is prohibited; keep the workload within provider terms and investigate any account notice directly.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health: Check the sender’s actual outgoing bitrate, server network path, encoder settings, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test with similar audio and video motion; do not assume the file’s nominal quality equals the bitrate arriving at YouTube.
  • CPU remains heavily loaded: Determine whether the process is encoding or resizing rather than simply sending a pre-encoded file. Reduce transformation work or test on Dedicated CPU if sustained load conflicts with shared-CPU guidance.
  • The stream stops after running for a while: Check whether the loop or sender process exited, whether the stream key changed, and whether YouTube reported an ingest or policy issue. Configure process-failure alerts and verify the recovery behavior of your own setup.
  • Transfer costs or allowance are higher than expected: Recalculate using the actual bitrate and hours online, include overhead, and check pooled usage and current billing in the account. A continuously pushed stream can use substantial transfer even when CPU use is low.
  • Viewers see buffering despite low CPU: CPU alone does not identify the cause. Review YouTube stream health, outgoing bitrate stability, and the network path; consider data-center location in relation to the audience, without assuming location alone fixes delivery.
