There is no evidence-based universal winner: an ARM server may cost less for a particular plan, but the cheapest suitable option depends on its current price, region, transfer allowance and ability to sustain your exact stream workload. Compare total monthly cost and test the same encoder settings on both architectures before choosing. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264; at those bitrates, one continuous stream uses roughly 324 GB or 551 GB of outbound data, respectively, over a 30-day month, before overhead.
What determines the monthly cost?
A 24/7 YouTube stream from a rented server has more cost inputs than its advertised compute price. Budget for the instance, storage, any separately billed public IP, outbound data overage, backups and applicable taxes. Then check that the instance can keep up with the work you intend it to do.
The key distinction is whether the server encodes video or only relays an already encoded feed. Encoding consumes CPU or supported hardware-accelerated resources; relaying has a different compute profile. Do not treat a plan’s vCPU count or low monthly price as proof that it can encode a particular resolution, frame rate and codec continuously.
Estimate outbound data for one stream
For a constant bitrate, a 30-day month contains 2,592,000 seconds. Convert megabits to decimal gigabytes by multiplying Mbps by seconds, then dividing by 8 bits per byte and 1,000 megabytes per gigabyte:

Approximate monthly data (GB) = bitrate (Mbps) × 32,400
| Example stream | Approximate outbound data per 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 324 GB | Calculation from a constant 10 Mbps bitrate for 24 hours a day over 30 days |
| 17 Mbps | 551 GB | Calculation from a constant 17 Mbps bitrate for 24 hours a day over 30 days |
These are transparent estimates, not provider measurements. Actual usage can be higher because of audio and protocol overhead, other traffic, or a provider’s measurement conventions. Use the stream’s total outbound bitrate and check the provider’s policy for the chosen plan and region.

AWS lists 1 TB of data transfer for the Lightsail bundle discussed below, so that allowance is not automatically the bottleneck for one stream at either illustrative bitrate. That does not establish suitability for encoding, and you should account for other traffic and verify the plan’s current transfer terms.

| Comparison factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Total monthly cost | Instance price, storage, public IP charges if separate, transfer allowance and overage, backups, and taxes where applicable. |
| Sustained encoding capacity | Run the same resolution, frame rate, codec and encoder settings. vCPU counts are not directly equivalent performance measures; distinguish CPU encoding from hardware acceleration and confirm that the hardware and software support it. |
| Network and transfer | Included outbound data, overage rate, network or port limits, billing region, and how the provider measures usage. |
| Compatibility | Confirm the operating-system image, encoder package, codec implementation and required ARM or x86 support. |
| Operations and recovery | Plan for process supervision, monitoring, restart behavior, updates and recovery after a failure. The available evidence does not establish an uptime advantage for either architecture. |
AWS says that customers needing highly configurable instances and consistently high CPU performance for applications such as video encoding should consider EC2. That is AWS guidance about when to consider its EC2 service; it does not show that every x86 VPS outperforms ARM or that EC2 is necessary for every stream. See AWS Lightsail instance FAQ.
A published price example—and what it does not prove
AWS’s Lightsail documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, lists a public IPv4 Linux bundle at $5 per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB of memory, 20 GB of storage and 1 TB of data transfer. The Lightsail pricing page also lists its entry public IPv4 Linux plan at $5 per month. Treat these as dated published prices, not a quote for every region or a recommendation for continuous video encoding.

Lightsail bundles include a transfer allowance, and AWS says outbound transfer is charged after the applicable monthly allowance is exceeded. The overage and allowance details depend on applicable bundle terms, so check the current documentation for your region and plan rather than assuming the headline amount is sufficient. See AWS data transfer in Lightsail and Amazon Lightsail pricing.
The bundle’s low base price does not show that it is ARM-based or that it can encode a chosen stream continuously. Nor does it provide a like-for-like comparison against a specific ARM plan. The official bundle details are at AWS Lightsail instance bundles.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings to define the workload
Before comparing plans, write down whether you will encode on the server or send it a pre-encoded stream. For an encoder feeding YouTube, the official guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60.
YouTube Help explains that it transcodes an ingested live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. These recommendations define useful inputs for a cost estimate; they do not establish what a particular server can encode. Review the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before configuring a stream.
A practical decision process
- Fix the workload. Record the output resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, audio bitrate and whether the server encodes or relays.
- Choose the billing context. Compare actual offers in the same region and currency, and note monthly runtime, billing period, storage, public IP charges and tax treatment.
- Calculate transfer. Use the bitrate formula above for a first estimate, then include overhead and any other outbound traffic. Compare the result with the plan’s included allowance and overage terms.
- Check architecture support. Confirm that the operating-system image and your encoder and codec builds support the chosen ARM or x86 plan.
- Test sustained performance. Run the same encoding configuration on each candidate and verify it can maintain the intended output without falling behind. Do not infer equivalent capacity from equal vCPU counts.
- Account for operations. Decide how the process will be monitored and restarted, how updates will be managed, and how the stream will recover after a disconnect.
The available official figures do not provide matching current ARM and x86 offers or an independent encoding benchmark. A quantified architecture winner would therefore be unsupported. The right result is conditional on the specific plans, region, transfer policy and measured ability to sustain the selected settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than managing a server, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, including your computer or connection. Each slot streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a cost or setup mismatch
- Transfer estimates exceed the plan allowance: Recalculate using the full outgoing audio-and-video bitrate, a 30-day runtime, and the provider’s billing units. Check for other workloads and confirm current regional allowance and overage terms.
- The server cannot keep up with the stream: Confirm whether it is encoding or relaying, then reduce the workload or select a plan with verified sustained capacity. Retest the same settings rather than comparing architecture labels or vCPU counts.
- The encoder package will not run: Verify that the OS image and codec/encoder build support the instance architecture; do not assume an x86 package works on ARM.
- YouTube rejects or has trouble with the feed: Check the stream key and RTMP/RTMPS destination, then verify codec, CBR mode, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance.
- The stream stops after a process or host interruption: Configure process supervision and monitoring, and test restart and reconnect behavior. A low monthly compute price does not itself include an operations plan.
