How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Running on a Raspberry Pi During Indian Power Cuts

A Raspberry Pi UPS alone is not enough: keep the video source and network gear powered too, test the whole load, and understand what FFmpeg can—and cannot—recover.

To keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a power cut, back up the entire chain—not just the Pi: the video source, router, modem or ONT, and any required capture gear must all stay powered. Then test the UPS under that real combined load, set FFmpeg’s output to match the upload capacity you actually have, and plan a clean shutdown if the battery is nearly exhausted. A UPS can bridge a local power interruption; it cannot keep an ISP connection alive if the access network also goes down.

What needs backup power?

List every device the stream depends on before choosing a battery or UPS. A Pi-only backup will not help if the router loses power, and a powered Pi cannot stream if its camera, capture device, modem, or ONT has shut down.

  • The Raspberry Pi and its power supply.
  • The camera, media source, capture card, or converter needed to provide video and audio.
  • The router and modem or optical network terminal (ONT).
  • Any switch or other device on the path between the Pi and the internet.

Record each device’s input voltage and current, or measure its power draw in the intended configuration. Include conversion losses and battery ageing when estimating runtime. The needed capacity depends on the complete load and how long you want to operate; there is no universal UPS capacity or runtime for this setup.

Choose a power plan for the exact Pi and equipment

Match the Pi’s supply

Raspberry Pi’s official setup documentation lists 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5, 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, and 5 V at 2.5 A for Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier models. Check the current requirements for your exact board and attached peripherals before selecting a supply. The documentation also warns that voltage loss through a removable cable matters. Raspberry Pi Ltd. recommends: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Check every UPS output

For each device, confirm that the backup unit provides the right output voltage, enough current, and a compatible connector. Check whether it changes over to battery without rebooting the device, whether its battery can be replaced or monitored, and whether it signals low battery in a way your setup can use. A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT may help power the Pi, but do not assume a Pi-specific HAT also powers a router or ONT.

The cited UPSafePi manual is for Raspberry Pi 4B; it does not establish compatibility with every Pi model or prove how long a complete streaming chain will run. Treat it as a category example, not a universal recommendation. Compare candidate units by their documented outputs and measured runtime with all required equipment connected.

Configure and test the YouTube stream

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to measured upload capacity at the location, rather than assuming a particular bitrate will work on every connection. YouTube recommends a speed test, preflight testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream, and monitoring stream-health messages. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.

Test at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use, with representative motion and audio. Repeat while other devices that normally share the connection are active. If upload capacity fluctuates, lower the stream settings until the connection is stable; a speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the path will remain clear during an outage.

Use FFmpeg recovery as a network aid, not a UPS

FFmpeg can read live inputs and send media streams. Its FIFO pseudo-muxer includes configurable recovery behavior for output failures, including network-output problems. Relevant options include whether to attempt recovery, the wait interval between attempts, and the maximum number of attempts. Exact options and defaults can vary by installed FFmpeg version and build, so check the local version’s documentation before relying on a particular setting.

Recovery can help FFmpeg reconnect after a brief network interruption, but it cannot restore power to the Pi or network equipment, nor can it repair an unavailable ISP path. Even a successful reconnect may appear as an interruption on YouTube. Test the behavior with your actual source and YouTube stream rather than assuming a reconnect will be invisible.

Test the failure cases before depending on the stream

  1. Run the full setup on backup power. Connect the Pi, source, router, modem or ONT, and required network devices. Simulate loss of mains power and check that UPS changeover does not reboot them.
  2. Verify YouTube health. Watch the stream-health information during a representative test, including audio and motion, and confirm the selected encoder settings remain stable.
  3. Simulate a brief network interruption. Confirm that FFmpeg attempts recovery as configured and note whether the YouTube stream visibly drops or resumes.
  4. Measure runtime under the real load. Observe how long the complete chain remains powered. Do not infer your runtime from a UPS product headline or a Pi-only test.
  5. Decide what happens at low battery. If the unit can provide a low-battery signal, use it to stop FFmpeg cleanly and shut down the Pi when reserve is low. Raspberry Pi warns that sudden power loss can corrupt storage; a battery plan or orderly shutdown reduces that risk.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The Pi stays on, but the YouTube stream stops. The router, modem/ONT, source, or another required device lost power; alternatively, the ISP path failed. Check which parts of the chain are on backup power. Include every necessary device in the load, then test whether the internet connection remains available during a local outage.
The Pi reboots when mains power fails. The UPS changed over too slowly, its output is unsuitable, or the supply, cable, or load exceeds what it can provide. Check output voltage, current capacity, connectors, changeover behavior, and the Pi’s model-specific supply requirements. Test with peripherals attached.
The stream disconnects despite equipment staying powered. The internet route may have dropped, or upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable. Check YouTube stream health and the connection under realistic conditions. Test lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary; do not treat FFmpeg recovery as a substitute for an available network.
FFmpeg does not recover after an output failure. The installed build may differ from the documentation being followed, recovery may not be configured as expected, or the failure may exceed its retry behavior. Check the installed FFmpeg version and its supported FIFO options, then test the configured wait interval and retry limit with a brief network interruption.
The Pi’s storage is corrupted after an outage. Power was removed abruptly before the system could shut down cleanly. Use a UPS with suitable low-battery signaling or another orderly-shutdown plan. Boot-media choice alone does not keep a live stream running.

Cost and network limits to resolve locally

There is no reliable way to name a UPS size or promise a runtime without the Pi model, source, router/ONT requirements, total measured load, and target outage duration. Likewise, internet service performance during local outages depends on the access network and locality; no Indian provider’s coverage or outage behavior is established here. Test the actual wired or wireless connection and, if considering a backup mobile path, verify that it remains connected during the same kind of outage.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded video while your home equipment is off, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles the loop, so no computer, OBS, home power, or home internet connection has to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera feeds. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
