YouTube Says Your Encoder Isn’t Sending Enough Data: FFmpeg Pacing and Troubleshooting

YouTube’s “not enough data” warning is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the exact error, FFmpeg’s real-time output, stream settings, and upload capacity before adding -re.

If YouTube says it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, treat that as a delivery warning—not proof that one particular FFmpeg flag is wrong. Check the exact Live Control Room error, whether FFmpeg is keeping up with real time, the stream’s settings, and your upload capacity before changing anything. FFmpeg’s -re option paces input at real-time speed; it can help when sending a prerecorded file, but it is not a general fix for a live source, weak connection, or overloaded encoder.

What YouTube’s warning means

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes this health status as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” That describes a continuity problem in the video being delivered to YouTube; it does not identify the cause on its own. The issue could involve upload capacity, a mismatch between the configured stream and the connection, or an encoder that is not producing output fast enough. The warning alone does not establish which one applies. YouTube Live health-status messages

Start with any detailed message displayed next to the health indicator. YouTube’s error guidance distinguishes issues such as insufficient bandwidth, incorrect bitrate, unsupported codec, resolution problems, audio/video settings, and keyframe frequency. These need different checks, so do not assume that every “not enough data” warning calls for a pacing or keyframe change. YouTube’s live streaming error messages

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Record the exact warning. In YouTube Live Control Room, note the health indicator message and any additional error text, along with its timestamp. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear. The detail helps distinguish a delivery-continuity warning from a specific settings error. Error-message guidance
  2. Check whether FFmpeg is keeping pace. For a live encode, examine FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed and output behavior. If it cannot sustain real time, output can become discontinuous even when the command is syntactically valid. Do not label the CPU or GPU as the bottleneck without evidence from the machine or FFmpeg’s output.
  3. Verify the stream configuration. Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and value, and keyframe interval against the YouTube ingestion configuration you selected and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. If your available bandwidth cannot support the chosen resolution, YouTube advises lowering it. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
  4. Test upload capacity. Run a speed test and compare the available upload capacity with the intended stream bitrate. Leave room for network variability rather than treating a single speed-test result as guaranteed sustained capacity. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection. YouTube’s guidance
  5. Change one relevant setting at a time and retest. Use representative audio and video movement, not only a static or unusually light section. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health during it. YouTube’s testing guidance

When FFmpeg’s -re helps—and when it does not

FFmpeg documents -re as a real-time input read-rate control, equivalent to reading at 1× speed. A prerecorded file can otherwise be read faster than real time, so pacing it can be useful when sending that file as a live output. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the option’s behavior and context.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

First identify what the input is. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read rate with an actual capture device or live stream. For a live source, adding -re is not a universal solution for network congestion, an incorrect bitrate, or an encoder that cannot keep up. It also does not replace checking the detailed YouTube error or matching the stream configuration to your connection.

Check YouTube’s codec, bitrate, and keyframe guidance

YouTube’s current live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Listed audio options include AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 surround audio over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually selected, rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube live encoder settings

Codec Resolution and frame rate YouTube recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
H.264 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, not guaranteed upload-speed requirements or universal quality targets. Compare like with like: codec, resolution, frame rate, and the capacity of your connection all matter. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should be no more than four seconds. Its error guidance treats incorrect bitrate and keyframe frequency as distinct issues; an ingestion error can also result from an incorrect GOP size. Encoder settings · Error messages

Use the exact error to choose the next check

  • Insufficient bandwidth or unstable delivery: test upload capacity and try a stream quality that is reliable for the connection. If needed, lower the resolution rather than assuming a pacing flag will compensate for limited bandwidth. YouTube’s connection and resolution guidance
  • Bitrate error: compare the configured bitrate and mode with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in use. Do not apply an H.264 figure to AV1 or H.265/HEVC by assumption. YouTube’s error guidance
  • Keyframe or GOP error: inspect the actual keyframe interval and GOP size. YouTube recommends two seconds and sets four seconds as the maximum in its current guidance. YouTube’s encoder settings
  • Codec, resolution, or audio/video settings error: verify each setting against YouTube’s accepted configuration and the settings selected for the ingest stream. These are separate error categories, not evidence that FFmpeg needs -re. YouTube’s error guidance
