If you want to keep finished videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, AWS Elemental MediaLive is usually more machinery than you need. MediaLive is a real-time video-processing service, not a simple file-loop app. A continuous prerecorded stream also needs playout: something to select and repeat your files or playlist. For that, compare a cloud playout service such as StreamNeo first, a local OBS setup, or a broader AWS workflow if you need broadcast-style processing and switching.
What MediaLive does—and what a prerecorded loop needs
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder to convert and send video, using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube lists software and hardware encoders, and notes that products on its verified list are not made by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
MediaLive handles real-time video encoding and processing. AWS documents scheduled or dynamic input switching, as well as a CDK example that loops an MP4. That shows a loop can be built within an AWS architecture; it does not make MediaLive a one-click file player. A finished-video stream needs both a source that keeps playing and an encoder/output path that delivers the stream to YouTube.
Best alternatives for looping prerecorded video on YouTube
For an already-recorded program, start with whether you need local production control, unattended cloud playout, specialist hardware, or a larger AWS pipeline. These options differ in what must stay online and how much setup you manage.

| 1. StreamNeo | A prepared video or playlist should run continuously on YouTube while your computer is off. | Cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists; YouTube only. Compare storage, price, stream settings, and recovery needs against your intended runtime. |
| 2. OBS on a computer or VPS | You want a no-charge software encoder, flexible scenes, or direct control over the source. | The machine, OBS process, power, and internet uplink remain in the operating path. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. |
| 3. Other cloud playout services | You want uploaded files or a playlist sent continuously without running your own encoder. | YouTube’s encoder list includes Gyre and Upstream. Looping Stream describes uploading files, arranging a playlist, and continuous RTMP delivery. Check destination support, file and playlist limits, storage, settings, pricing, recovery, and archive behavior with each provider. |
| 4. AJA HELO Plus | You specifically want standalone encoding hardware with scheduled prerecorded playback and no computer. | YouTube’s encoder guide describes its PlayToStream feature for this use. It is specialist hardware; verify current device, firmware, and workflow compatibility before buying. |
| 5. AWS Elemental MediaLive | Your workflow needs real-time processing, multiple inputs, scheduled switching, or integration with a broader AWS media pipeline. | Configuration and usage-based billing make it a poor default for a simple file loop. Build an estimate from the actual region, running inputs, outputs, add-ons, and runtime. |
StreamNeo is first here because it runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
How to choose the right setup
- Only prerecorded video, computer can be off: choose cloud playout. Check how the provider handles playlists, storage, reconnection, and your target destination.
- Need scenes, overlays, live sources, or hands-on control: OBS gives you flexible local production, but the computer or VPS and its network must keep running.
- Need scheduled source changes or an AWS media pipeline: MediaLive may fit, especially when the stream includes more than a repeated file. Its flexibility comes with configuration and resource-based costs.
- Want a dedicated device instead of a computer: check whether the AJA HELO Plus’s scheduled playback workflow suits your files and operating needs.
- Need a saved YouTube replay: account for YouTube’s archive limit before choosing a continuous run. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not guarantee that longer streams will be.
Compare options using the same questions: Is the source prerecorded or live? Must a computer stay online? Do you need scheduling or playlist controls? Which destinations and stream settings are supported? What monitoring and recovery are available? What will the intended runtime cost? Must the event produce an archived VOD?

Starting an encoder-based YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so activate it before your planned start.
- Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose the stream you will send.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder or service. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, recordings, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure and test the encoder. Set the output to match your source and connection, then send a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Confirm YouTube receives the picture and sound and that stream health is acceptable before relying on an unattended run.
- Start sending, then monitor. A stream can fail because of the encoder, uplink, key, source file, or YouTube. Check the stream health indicators and confirm the live event is actually receiving video.
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations favor RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio choices include AAC and MP3. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For 1080p at 30 fps, it lists 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; for 1080p at 60 fps, 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. These are recommendations, not guarantees: choose settings your upload connection can sustain and test them. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
What an AWS MediaLive setup entails
MediaLive is worth considering when you need its processing, input, switching, scheduling, or AWS integration capabilities—not merely because the destination is YouTube. For a loop, AWS’s MP4 example uses CDK to generate a channel, so the complete implementation involves an AWS configuration rather than selecting a file in a basic desktop player. See AWS Elemental MediaLive documentation and the AWS CDK channel example.

Cost is not a single flat monthly fee. AWS charges by the hour for running inputs, outputs, and add-on features, with a 10-minute minimum. AWS says charges continue while a channel is running even if no content is arriving or outputs are not being produced. The examples on AWS’s pricing page depend on region and configuration, so estimate your own inputs, outputs, features, and runtime rather than treating an example as a universal price. Consult AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.
Copyright, reused content, and reliability
Only stream recordings your channel owns or is authorized to broadcast. Repeating a video does not itself establish copyright permission, make a channel eligible for monetization, or guarantee compliance with YouTube policies. YouTube’s channel monetization policies address reused and repetitive content; review current rules for your channel and material.

No encoder can remove every failure point. A local setup depends on the machine, process, power, and uplink; a cloud service moves playout and encoding to provider infrastructure but still depends on that service and YouTube. Invalid keys, source-file problems, network issues, and platform outages can interrupt a stream. Check each provider’s recovery behavior and monitoring rather than treating continuity claims as a guarantee.

- YouTube is not receiving a signal: confirm the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are set, and the selected stream is live in Control Room. Regenerate an exposed or suspect key and update the encoder.
- The stream starts but drops or buffers: check YouTube stream health, encoder logs, and sustained upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or output quality if the connection cannot support the current setting; test again before leaving it unattended.
- Video or audio is missing: verify the source file plays correctly, the chosen codec and audio format are supported, and the encoder is sending the intended tracks.
- The video does not repeat as expected: check that the playlist or loop option is enabled and that the source file is valid and fully uploaded. For AWS, confirm the channel schedule and input configuration rather than assuming MediaLive will loop a file by default.
- A long stream has no replay: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. If a VOD matters, plan a shorter event or verify current YouTube behavior and recording options before the run.
