To stream to YouTube from Ubuntu on AWS EC2, launch an Ubuntu Server instance in an available AWS Region in India, install an encoder, and send its output to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your event in YouTube Live Control Room. The encoder connects outbound to YouTube; you do not need to expose an inbound RTMP port. Choose the instance only after matching its CPU or GPU capacity and network bandwidth to your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test before the event.
Before you launch: check YouTube eligibility and plan the stream
YouTube requires a verified channel for live streaming. Its eligibility guidance says a channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Confirm eligibility and event settings in YouTube Studio before paying for an EC2 runtime; these requirements may change.
Decide the output format first. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1, at up to 60 fps. The encoder software must support the selected protocol and codec, and the EC2 instance must have enough compute capacity to encode at your chosen settings while sustaining the upload rate.
Choose a region and instance based on the workload
In the AWS console, select an available Region in India if it suits your audience and operational needs. Region affects latency, product availability, and price, but there is no universally correct India-region instance size or price for this workload. Check current EC2 instance availability and regional pricing before launching.

For CPU software encoding, capacity depends on the codec and the resolution and frame rate. A GPU-capable instance or a separate hardware encoder may suit a workload that a general-purpose CPU cannot encode reliably, but this guide does not establish a specific instance recommendation. AWS network bandwidth also varies by instance type. Verify current specifications for the exact instance rather than assuming that a given class guarantees a particular stream rate.
How to set up Ubuntu on EC2 for YouTube Live
- Select the image: In the EC2 launch workflow, choose a current official Ubuntu Server AMI published through Canonical’s AWS account. Match its architecture and Ubuntu release to the encoder software you intend to use.
- Choose access and network settings: Create or select an EC2 key pair. Configure the instance’s security group to permit SSH only from your known public IP range where practical. The encoder needs outbound internet access to reach package repositories and YouTube’s ingest service; public inbound RTMP access is not required for this contribution path.
- Launch and connect: Launch the instance in your chosen Region and connect over SSH using the matching private key and the Ubuntu account name,
ubuntu. Update Ubuntu and install and configure the encoder you selected. Exact installation commands depend on the software and release; no single command or instance size is established here as a validated end-to-end setup. - Configure YouTube Live: In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the channel is eligible, create or select the event, and copy that event’s RTMPS server URL and stream key. These values are specific to the event; do not reuse a generic URL or key from a tutorial.
- Set up the encoder: Select a YouTube-supported protocol and a codec supported by your encoder. Set the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframe interval to match the event and instance capacity. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key in the encoder’s designated fields.
- Test the whole path: Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status, and test with realistic audio and video motion. YouTube recommends configuring about 20% more available bandwidth than the stream bitrate and setting up in advance.
- Stop and clean up: Stop the encoder after the event. If the host is temporary, terminate the EC2 instance when you no longer need it, and review attached storage and other billable resources separately.
Encoder settings for 1080p
YouTube’s current published H.264 recommendations include these two 1080p targets. They are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can encode or deliver them reliably.

The headroom figures apply YouTube’s approximately 20% bandwidth recommendation to the listed video bitrate; they are planning estimates, not a measured EC2 result. Audio and protocol overhead also use bandwidth, so do not size a connection to the exact video bitrate alone. Use the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for other codecs or output formats.
- Rate control: Use CBR as recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval, also called a GOP interval, as recommended by YouTube.
- Frame rate: Keep the encoder output at or below 60 fps and consistent with the source and event requirements.
- Instance fit: Confirm that the instance sustains the selected encoding workload and network rate during a realistic test. A successful SSH connection or a running process alone does not show that the stream is healthy.
Keep the stream key and EC2 access secure
Treat the YouTube stream key like a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or shared log. Limit access to the machine and encoder configuration to trusted operators. If the key is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Restrict inbound SSH to your own IP range where possible. AWS warns that opening SSH to all IP addresses may be acceptable for a brief test instance that will promptly stop or terminate, but is unsafe for production. The outbound encoder-to-YouTube path does not justify opening public inbound RTMP ports.
Test and troubleshoot before the event
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
- Check that you copied the RTMPS URL and key for the correct event and that the stream key is entered in the encoder’s key field without extra spaces.
- Confirm the instance has outbound internet access and can reach the ingest service. Review subnet routing and outbound security-group rules.
- Verify that the encoder is using the matching protocol and URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
The encoder reports an SSL certificate or connection error
Check the exact RTMPS address copied from Live Control Room. YouTube advises trying port 443 if needed when resolving an SSL certificate issue. Do not replace the event’s ingest address with an unverified generic endpoint.

The stream buffers or YouTube reports poor health
- Check real available bandwidth and leave about 20% above the stream bitrate, with additional allowance for audio and overhead.
- Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the instance or network cannot sustain the configured output.
- Test representative motion and audio: a static screen can conceal encoding or bandwidth problems that appear with gameplay or other moving footage.
- Check whether the instance’s network capacity and compute usage remain adequate throughout the test; AWS bandwidth varies by instance type.
The stream is choppy or the instance cannot encode in real time
Reduce the encoding workload or select an instance with suitable CPU or GPU capacity. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder settings all affect the required compute. There is no one instance size established as right for every 1080p workload, so validate the exact configuration before a live event.
SSH access fails
Confirm that you are using the private key matching the selected EC2 key pair, the Ubuntu username ubuntu, and the instance’s reachable address. Check that the security group permits SSH from your current public IP and that the instance has a valid network route.

What does EC2 streaming cost in India?
Budget for the instance runtime, storage, public IPv4 if applicable, and data transfer. Exact costs depend on the instance, Region, runtime, and traffic volume; check current AWS prices for the India Region and configuration you plan to use rather than relying on a generic estimate.
AWS states that 100 GB of internet data transfer out per month is free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions except China and GovCloud. This is not a stream-specific allowance or a complete estimate of the deployment’s cost. For a rough traffic calculation, multiply the outgoing bitrate in megabits per second by seconds streamed and divide by eight to estimate megabytes, then account for audio, protocol overhead, and AWS billing units.
EC2 is billed while the instance runs. For a temporary event, stopping or terminating the instance when it is no longer needed can avoid ongoing compute charges; stopping does not necessarily remove charges for attached storage or other resources. Review the specific resource status and AWS billing details after cleanup.
