How to Fix Dropped Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Stream Hosted on Hetzner

Find whether a 24/7 YouTube stream’s dropped frames come from encoder timing, CPU load, outbound delivery, or Hetzner plan constraints—and fix the measured cause.

Start with the exact stream-health error in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with what your encoder is producing and what the Hetzner server can sustain. “Dropped frames” can come from incorrect output timing, an overloaded encoder or source, or a weak or unstable connection to YouTube; it is not, by itself, proof of a Hetzner fault. Capture the error and logs before changing settings, and test one change at a time.

First identify where frames are being lost

A 24/7 stream has several links in its delivery chain: the source video or feed, the encoder, the server’s outbound connection, and YouTube’s ingest. The same visible symptom can arise at different points, so first compare YouTube’s health status with the encoder’s local output or archive, if enabled.

What you observe Where to investigate first
The local preview or saved archive is already choppy, incomplete, or stuttering Source playback or capture, decoder and filters, encoder timing, and server CPU load.
Local output looks healthy, but YouTube reports it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming Outbound throughput and stability, the route to the configured YouTube ingest, and the stream’s bitrate and settings.
YouTube reports a codec, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe problem The setting named in Live Control Room and whether the encoder’s output matches the selected ingest configuration.
The issue appears at recurring times or only after long operation Time-correlated CPU and network changes, interruptions in the source, scheduled restarts, and traffic usage.

YouTube’s Live Control Room reports errors alongside stream health, and error messages carry timestamps. Record the exact text and time; that is more useful than relying on a generic “dropped frames” counter.

  • The exact YouTube Live Control Room health message and its timestamp.
  • The complete encoder command or configuration, encoder version, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval.
  • Encoder logs, CPU utilization and load, and whether the local preview or archive is smooth and complete.
  • Outbound network throughput and errors over time, not just a single peak speed-test result.
  • The Hetzner product family, location, public network setup, and account traffic usage.

Keep a fallback or restart plan before changing a production stream. Change one variable at a time, record what changed, and check both local output and YouTube health afterward. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during an event, but its guidance does not specify a universal alert interval for a 24/7 Hetzner deployment.

Check YouTube’s health message and encoder settings

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and read the specific warning rather than treating all health problems as network drops. YouTube’s documented error categories include codec and format, bitrate, video settings, and keyframe frequency. Match the encoder output to the settings for that stream in Live Control Room and use its message to identify the setting to correct.

Verify the output profile

  • Protocol and codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the listed RTMP/RTMPS setup includes H.264 video. Codec availability can vary by ingest configuration, so follow the profile actually selected for your stream rather than assuming a codec listed for another mode applies.
  • Bitrate: Choose the recommended range for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s error guidance says a non-variable-resolution stream should use the bitrate for its selected resolution in Ingestion Settings. If the connection cannot sustain the required rate, YouTube advises lowering the resolution.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for the listed settings.
  • Frame rate: The current guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a frame rate the source and encoder can sustain; selecting a higher output rate does not repair a source that cannot produce frames on time.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 audio is included in the listed recommendations.

Do not copy a bitrate value from a different resolution, frame rate, codec, or ingest profile. The appropriate value depends on the stream configuration and available outbound capacity; use the current recommendation and error text shown for your stream.

Determine whether the encoder or source is falling behind

Check whether the source itself plays smoothly and whether the encoder can process it in real time. YouTube specifically recommends checking encoder version, preview quality, CPU load, and local archive problems. A choppy preview or archive points upstream of YouTube delivery, even if the YouTube dashboard also reports unhealthy input.

If CPU load is high

Compare CPU behavior with the timestamps of the drops. If saturation coincides with choppy local output, reduce the encoding workload—for example, by lowering complexity, resolution, or frame rate as appropriate to the source—or test server resources suited to the measured load. There is no single preset or Hetzner server size that can be recommended without the encoder configuration, codec, and hardware details.

If you use FFmpeg

Keep the full command, version, and logs together. Inspect input timestamps, real-time pacing, output frame-rate mode, filter workload, and whether the process keeps up continuously. FFmpeg’s -fps_mode behavior matters: cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach the requested constant frame rate, while vfr can drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. A reported drop can therefore be an output-timing decision rather than a network failure.

Decide what kind of input the command receives before changing pacing options: a file being replayed, a live capture or network input, or an already paced feed. FFmpeg’s -re / -readrate controls input reading; its documentation cautions that a low read rate with an actual capture device or live input can cause packet loss. Do not add -re, change -fps_mode, or raise a frame-drop threshold simply because another command uses it. Confirm the input and timing behavior first.

Test outbound delivery to YouTube

If local output is healthy while YouTube reports insufficient incoming video, measure sustained outbound performance from the server and look for variability or network errors during the affected period. A single speed-test peak does not establish that the server can continuously deliver the configured bitrate to the relevant YouTube ingest. Check the actual ingest endpoint and network path used by the stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If measured capacity is inadequate or unstable, test a lower bitrate or resolution that fits the connection, then watch the same health indicators. Preserve the source, encoder settings, and observation window as consistently as possible so the result helps isolate the cause. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says that a healthy-looking stream can still have an outbound internet connection issue and recommends testing outbound strength.

Check which Hetzner plan and traffic terms apply

First establish whether the host is a Hetzner Cloud server or a dedicated server, then note its product family, location, public network setup, and monthly traffic counter. Hetzner’s published traffic allowances differ by product and region. Its traffic documentation lists 20 TB of included traffic for the EU Cloud CX, CPX, and CAX entries; the page was last changed on 2024-05-21. Other regions and product families have different figures, so confirm the current terms for the exact plan. An included monthly allowance is not a guaranteed per-instance streaming bitrate and does not, by itself, show that traffic policy caused dropped frames.

Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines hosted on physical servers, with shared-resource and dedicated-resource classes. If measured CPU contention lines up with the problem, assess the actual resource use and class rather than inferring encoding capacity from the product name. Hetzner’s Cloud overview says public internet connectivity requires a Primary IP.

Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer Service Agreement states a commercially reasonable effort toward 99.9% monthly Cloud Server availability. The agreement defines availability in terms of server operation or activity and includes exclusions; that figure is not a guarantee of YouTube ingestion, uninterrupted encoding, or frame-perfect media delivery.

Apply a fix that matches the evidence

Evidence Next action What to verify
YouTube names an incorrect codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, or keyframe setting Correct the named setting to match the current Live Control Room profile and YouTube guidance. Whether the same error clears and the stream health improves.
Local output is choppy and CPU is saturated Reduce encoding workload or test more suitable server resources; alter one factor at a time. Whether local output becomes smooth and YouTube health follows.
Local output is clean, but outbound delivery or YouTube health is poor Investigate sustained egress, network errors, route, and ingest endpoint; test a lower bitrate or resolution if capacity is insufficient. Whether delivery remains stable over the period when drops previously occurred.
Drops coincide with traffic usage or a suspected plan constraint Verify the exact product, location, allowance, current usage, and plan terms; contact Hetzner support if needed. Whether the plan facts and observed network behavior support that explanation.
No local or outbound problem is visible Update the encoder or test a different encoder, keeping the source and stream settings consistent where possible. Whether the change isolates a software-specific timing or encoding issue.

If changing encoder software or server resources, keep a rollback path for the live channel. A test is most informative when it addresses a measured cause and does not also change resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder at once.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the ongoing job is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream online rather than diagnosing an existing Hetzner pipeline, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
