For routine Old School RuneScape item deals, use the Grand Exchange when it suits the item and transaction. For a direct trade, agree on the exact terms first, keep the exchange in one trade, and inspect the final offer before accepting. Cancel if anything changes, feels pressured, or is unclear—and never hand over valuables on a promise that they will be returned.
Choose the Grand Exchange or a direct trade
Use the Grand Exchange for suitable routine deals
The Grand Exchange is a practical option for ordinary buying and selling when the item and transaction suit it. Check the item and quantity in the interface, and treat the displayed price as a guide—not a guaranteed valuation. Jagex cautions players that Grand Exchange prices may not be fully correct: Jagex’s scam guidance.
Use a direct trade only when you can verify the whole deal
A player-to-player trade requires you to inspect what is actually offered. Before opening the trade, agree on the exact item, amount, and payment. Keep the exchange together in a single trade rather than splitting it into stages or relying on a later promise. Jagex’s advice is direct: “Complete all deals in one trade.”
Check every trade window before accepting
- Agree on the exact item, quantity, and payment before starting the trade.
- Inspect the offer shown in the trade window. Confirm that the item and quantity match what you agreed.
- On the final confirmation screen, read the displayed items and quantities again before accepting.
- Cancel if the offer changes, you are unsure what is being exchanged, or the other player pressures you to proceed.
A trade window is not a guarantee that the deal is fair; it shows the terms you are about to accept. Do not accept an item as payment or a loan simply because someone says its value matches the Grand Exchange price.

Recognize common scam setups
- Trust trading: Someone asks you to hand over coins or valuable items, promising to return them later with a bonus, reward, or after a “test.” Decline. Once you give away the items, you are depending on the other player to return them.
- Changed or misleading offers: A player alters an offer or relies on you not checking the final screen. Compare the visible items and quantities with the agreement before accepting.
- Too-good-to-be-true deals: A seemingly exceptional offer can be bait. Pause and assess it rather than rushing into a trade.
- Pressure to hop worlds or use a special item: Repeated requests to change worlds, use particular items, or follow someone can be part of a scam setup. Stop if the process becomes complicated or does not make sense.
- Players working together: More than one player may be involved. Do not treat another player’s presence or reassurance as proof that a deal is safe.
If you cannot complete the deal clearly in one trade, walk away. Do not trade anything you are unwilling to lose.
Do not follow a trader into danger
Do not enter the Wilderness or another dangerous situation just because another player says it is safe. Jagex advises players not to enter the Wilderness unless they are prepared to die. If you are not prepared for the possible loss, decline and leave.

Protect your account from unauthorized trades
Item safety also depends on preventing someone else from accessing your account. Jagex recommends these protections in its account security guidance:
- Use a unique password that you do not reuse on other services.
- Enable an authenticator.
- Secure the email account connected to RuneScape.
- Review linked accounts and remove any you do not recognize.
- Set a RuneScape Bank PIN to help protect bank items from someone who does not know it.
Be cautious with messages that ask for private information. Jagex’s phishing guidance advises entering account details only on legitimate sites you have navigated to and checked. Avoid links that take you to a password-entry page; if a security email seems suspicious, go directly to the account settings instead of following its link.

What to do if a scam happens
- Report the player through the appropriate in-game process and provide any evidence you have. Jagex says evidence can make an investigation easier.
- Do not assume that a report means your items will be restored. Jagex’s guidance does not guarantee recovery.
- If you suspect someone accessed your account, secure your password, email, authenticator, linked accounts, and Bank PIN.
Jagex says scamming is against the in-game rules and that serious cases could result in a mute or ban. That is an enforcement warning, not a guarantee of punishment in every case or of recovering lost items. See Jagex’s scam guidance for its current advice.

Old School Bonds are virtual in-game items. Jagex says they can be traded directly between players or through the Grand Exchange for gold, and that they are tradeable only within Old School RuneScape.
