Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and notes on its Steam store page, then compare them with several recent reports from Steam Deck players. The rating tells you about compatibility and handheld usability—not whether the game will hold a particular frame rate. For performance clues, look for reports that describe actual play, settings, stutter, and any required workarounds.
Where to find the official Steam Deck rating
Valve displays compatibility ratings and review details on the Steam store and in the Steam library for games it has reviewed. On a Steam Deck, the first store tab highlights games Valve identifies as great on Deck. Ratings also apply to both LCD and OLED models, according to Valve; that does not establish that every game performs identically on both models. What each compatibility label means

Valve says its review process is ongoing, so a game’s rating may change as review coverage or game and system software changes. The page does not provide a current count or percentage of games reviewed.
Read the review details, not just the badge
Valve’s checks cover whether controls work and use appropriate button icons, whether the display supports the game and its text is legible, whether the game operates seamlessly—including navigating launchers—and whether system support such as Proton and applicable anti-cheat works. These checks help answer whether a game is usable on the handheld. They do not specify a minimum FPS target or promise smooth performance in every scene. Use recent Steam Deck reports to estimate performance
For a practical sense of how a particular game runs, check its ProtonDB community reports. Valve’s Proton FAQ points readers to ProtonDB for community compatibility information. These are player-submitted accounts, not official Valve ratings or controlled benchmarks, so treat them as clues rather than guarantees.
- Prioritize multiple recent reports specifically from Steam Deck players; a report for another Linux PC may not reflect handheld use.
- Look for the SteamOS and Proton context when the player provides it, along with the Deck model or other setup details.
- Prefer reports that describe performance over time, including frame-rate consistency and stutters, rather than a brief impression.
- Note the graphics settings, launch options, launcher or anti-cheat behavior, and whether a workaround is essential.
- Check report dates. Older experiences may reflect a different game version, Proton version, or system software.
A single report can reveal a useful issue, but multiple recent accounts that describe similar conditions provide a better basis for judging whether those results are likely to apply to you.

Compare two games without confusing compatibility and performance
When deciding between titles, compare the evidence in separate categories rather than treating the label as a performance score:
- Official status: the rating and Valve’s stated reason for it.
- Community evidence: how many recent Deck-specific reports you found and how closely their setups match yours.
- Play experience: reported frame-rate consistency, stutter, and settings needed.
- Friction: launcher, anti-cheat, or other compatibility hurdles and any required manual tweaks.
- Conditions: whether reports concern the LCD or OLED model and the kind of play you intend.
What you can verify after getting access to the game
If you can play the game—because you already own it or otherwise have access—the Steam in-game performance overlay lets you observe performance while it is running. Valve Support documents the overlay in its performance-monitor instructions. This is a way to check your own play, not a pre-purchase benchmark when you cannot run the title.
