Before removing a game, check its save and Steam Cloud behavior if the save matters.
Check available storage on Steam Deck
In Gaming Mode, press the Steam button and open Settings > Storage. Steam Deck uses built-in storage by default; this screen shows and manages system storage and connected storage. Use it to see which location has room before installing or moving a game.
Install games to a microSD card
Format the card for Steam Deck
Insert the card, then open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. Formatting prepares the card for use with the Deck and may take a few minutes. It can erase existing contents, so back up anything you need first. Valve’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide says any UHS-I (Class 3 or better) microSD card is supported. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds.
Select the card as the installation destination
When installing a game, choose the microSD library as the destination in Steam’s Storage controls. The exact prompts and button placement can vary with Steam client updates, so follow the available destination options shown on the Deck rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps. If the card does not appear as an available location, return to Storage settings and confirm it has been formatted and is connected.

Move an installed game instead of downloading it again
If the game is installed and you want to keep it on the Deck, move it to another available library rather than uninstalling and reinstalling it. In Settings > Storage, select the game and use Steam’s move control to choose the destination library. If the destination is not available yet, add a library location through the Storage interface. Valve’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide covers storage management; its separate Moving a Steam Installation and Games instructions describe Steam’s library and move controls, though some labels are oriented toward the PC client.
Uninstall a game and reclaim its installed files
- Open the game’s page in your Library and open its management menu.
- Choose Manage > Uninstall, then confirm the on-screen prompt.
Steam Support documents the client action as Manage > Uninstall in its Installing a game from a disc guide. The Deck’s menu presentation may differ, so follow the equivalent Library management option and confirmation prompt on your device. Uninstalling removes the installed game files; it does not necessarily establish what will happen to that game’s save data.

Check saves before uninstalling
Save locations and Steam Cloud support vary by game, and there is no universal guarantee that uninstalling preserves every save. Before removing a game whose progress you want to keep, check its Steam Cloud status or the publisher’s guidance and make sure the save is backed up as appropriate.
Avoid factory reset for routine space cleanup
A factory reset is not a substitute for uninstalling selected games. Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guidance says a factory reset clears all local data, including games, and reinstalls Steam and SteamOS. Use Storage management to remove or relocate particular installations instead.

Choose a microSD card by compatibility, not a higher speed label
If you need more room, look for a UHS-I card rated Class 3 or better. Check the usable capacity, seller authenticity, return policy, and warranty when comparing cards. Valve’s guidance does not rank brands or establish real-world loading-time differences, and a UHS-II or UHS-III rating is not a supported transfer-speed upgrade for Steam Deck.
