Choose Game Pass if the games you plan to play are included on a plan that works on your devices, and the subscription’s total cost for the time you’ll use it is worthwhile. Buy games individually if you want specific titles for ongoing access without depending on a subscription or a changing catalog. Compare the same games over the same period, then count only the bundled benefits you will actually use.
Start with the games you actually plan to play
Make a short list of the titles you expect to play during a defined period—for example, the next three or six months. Check each title against the current catalog for the plan, region, and platform you would use. A large catalog count does not help if it does not include your games.
Xbox’s US plan overview lists 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, and 50+ for Essential. These are approximate marketing counts, and catalog size and availability can change by region, plan, and platform. Check the current Xbox plan overview for your location and device.
Compare the plans, not just the Game Pass name
Game Pass plans differ in price, platform support, release timing, and included features. The following figures are monthly US prices shown by the Xbox Store on October 3, 2026; they are not global prices, and offers or prices may change.

Verify that the specific game is currently included in the plan you are considering. For release timing, Xbox’s comparison page says Ultimate includes day-one releases, while Premium does not; select Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months, with Call of Duty titles excluded from that timing commitment. Work out the cost over the same period
Compare the subscription cost for the months you expect to use it with the current prices of the same games bought separately. Include discounts you can actually get and any add-ons you intend to buy. Do not compare a year of subscription against one month of game prices, or count games you are unlikely to play.
- Choose a time window. Use the months you realistically expect to subscribe or play the games.
- Check inclusion and compatibility. Confirm each desired title is in the relevant plan’s current catalog for your region and platform.
- Calculate subscription cost. Multiply the plan’s regular local monthly price by the number of months you expect to keep it. Treat any introductory offer as temporary, not as the recurring price.
- Calculate individual purchases. Add the current prices of those same games, including applicable discounts and intended add-ons.
- Compare like with like. Consider what you will actually play during that period, and count plan benefits only when you would otherwise use them.
There is no universal break-even number of games: the result depends on their prices, the subscription duration, the plan that includes them, and any benefits you value. Xbox sells games separately, so buying only the titles you want is a valid alternative.

Decide how much access certainty matters
A Game Pass catalog title is available only while your subscription is active and the game remains in the library. Xbox’s FAQ says subscribers have access “until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.” It also says game titles, count, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. For a game you want to keep returning to, weigh that uncertainty against buying it individually. A purchase avoids dependence on catalog membership, but read the store license and platform terms that apply to that purchase.
Count only benefits you will use
Depending on the plan, bundled benefits may include online console multiplayer for paid games, cloud gaming, or partner services. Include those in your comparison only if they matter to your actual use. Xbox’s comparison page says online multiplayer for free-to-play games is available to every Xbox player, so a paid plan is not required solely to play those games online. Check Xbox’s current plan comparison for the benefits and platform support available to you.

Which option fits your play habits?
- Consider Game Pass if several games you want are currently included, you expect to play them within a limited period, and the plan’s usable features justify its cost.
- Consider individual purchases if you want one or two specific games, expect to revisit them over a longer time, or prefer not to rely on subscription and catalog availability.
- Recalculate when circumstances change. A new game list, a different subscription duration, a sale, or a change in local plan pricing can change which option costs less.
Prices, offers, catalogs, and plan terms are time- and region-sensitive. Confirm the current local price and title availability before deciding; recurring billing is on by default, and Xbox’s overview describes a limited one-time refund right for the most recent recurring charge if cancellation occurs within 30 days of payment. The refund is limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product; review the current Xbox terms rather than treating it as a general refund guarantee.
