The Grand Exchange (GE) is Old School RuneScape’s marketplace for tradeable items. Choose an item, set a buy or sell price and quantity, then collect the coins or items when offers match. You do not need to meet another player to trade. This guide covers the ordinary offer process, account restrictions, limits and the 2026 changes to high-value offers.
Where to access the Grand Exchange
The GE is in Varrock. Its interface lets you place offers in available slots; the number of slots and which items you can buy depend on your account.
- Free players: The OSRS Wiki’s reference describes three offer slots, and free players can buy only free-to-play items.
- Members: The reference describes eight offer slots.
- Ironman accounts: The reference describes a restricted GE interface for bonds only. Check the current in-game interface for the restrictions that apply to your account.
These slot counts and restrictions are reported by the OSRS Wiki’s Grand Exchange reference; account rules can change, so the game interface is the practical check.
How to place and collect an offer
- Open the GE interface in Varrock. Select an available offer slot.
- Choose the item and offer type. Set a buy offer to acquire an item, or a sell offer to exchange an item you own for coins. Some items cannot be traded through the GE.
- Enter a quantity and price. The guide price is a reference, not a promise that the item will trade at that amount. Offers can fill in part or in full as opposing offers become available.
- Review and submit. The interface displays your offer details. A buy offer can match available sell offers when its price meets or exceeds theirs; a sell offer can match buy offers at or above its price. Existing better-priced offers can affect the execution price.
- Collect the result. Use the GE collection interface to retrieve purchased items or proceeds from sales. You do not need to contact or meet the other player.

How to choose a price
There is a trade-off between speed and price. A buy price closer to current sell offers, or a sell price closer to current buy offers, is more competitive and may fill sooner. A less competitive price may wait longer, or may not fill. These are mechanics-based expectations, not a guarantee of timing or outcome.
Guide prices can lag behind market conditions, particularly for items traded less often. Jagex announced on 30 September 2026 that the maximum guide-price change would rise from 5% to 20%, and that updates would occur every three hours instead of every 24 hours; lower-volume items were also expected to update more often. Buy limits and item eligibility
Many items have a buy limit that restricts how many you can purchase over a four-hour period. The limit varies by item, and some variants share a connected limit. It is a purchase restriction: selling is not subject to the same GE rate limits. Check the specific item’s limit instead of assuming a universal quantity. The OSRS Wiki’s Grand Exchange reference covers the general limit system.
Offers above the old max-cash limit
Since Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update, GE offers can exceed the former 2,147,483,647 GP limit by combining coins and platinum tokens. Jagex says the combined-currency ceiling is about 2.149 trillion GP. Individual item stacks—including coin stacks—remain capped at 2.147 billion. This is not a reason to assume every high-value offer will fill: it still needs a matching offer, and existing buy limits continue to apply.

Jagex warns that GE interactions can convert platinum tokens to GP and may cause bank coin placeholders. Its stated workaround is to keep the exact coin amount needed for a purchase in your inventory. For the current mechanics and caveats, read Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update.

Jagex confirmed in its 30 September 2026 update that GE tax still applies and remains capped at 5 million coins per item. That announcement does not establish the current tax percentage, so do not rely on an older percentage figure as current. See Jagex’s update for the confirmed cap.

Common reasons an offer may not complete
- Your price does not match available offers: Adjusting the price toward opposing offers may make it more competitive, but changes the price you are willing to accept or pay.
- The item is not tradeable through the GE: Not every item can be bought or sold there.
- You reached the item’s buy limit: Limits apply over four-hour periods to many items, and related variants can share a limit.
- Your account cannot buy that item or use that offer slot: Free-player and Ironman restrictions differ from members’ access.
- The guide price is a poor fit for current activity: A guide price is not a guaranteed execution price, and low-volume items may have less reliable estimates.
