Spoilers for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH retells only part of the original FINAL FANTASY VII: it follows Cloud and his companions after they escape Midgar and ends at the Forgotten Capital. As the second entry in a three-game reimagining, it changes the journey’s order, postpones Wutai, expands some characters’ roles and carries forward Remake’s questions about fate. It is not a scene-for-scene adaptation, and its ambiguous ending imagery should not be treated as having one confirmed explanation.
How much of the original story does Rebirth cover?
Rebirth picks up after the party leaves Midgar, the setting for much of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, and follows its pursuit of Sephiroth across the planet. Square Enix describes Rebirth as the second installment in a three-part reimagining of the 1997 game, with the story reaching the Forgotten Capital. It does not adapt the entire original game. Square Enix’s official Rebirth page provides the synopsis and trilogy framing.
That distinction matters when comparing the games: Remake focuses on the Midgar portion, while Rebirth carries the party farther along the original adventure. The remake project divides and reshapes that narrative across three titles rather than reproducing the 1997 game in one release.

What changes in the journey and its pacing?
The locations do not appear in the same order as they do in the original. In a PlayStation Blog interview, director Tetsuya Nomura said Wutai is not part of Rebirth’s route and will be visited in the next installment. Rebirth’s journey instead reaches the Forgotten Capital.
So the difference is not simply that Rebirth adds more detail to the same sequence of events. It also reorganizes when and where parts of the wider journey happen, leaving some material for the trilogy’s final game.

Why does the remake trilogy raise questions about fate?
Remake introduced the Whispers, beings presented as arbiters of fate, and made the possibility of departing from established events part of the story itself. PlayStation’s Rebirth guide describes Remake as largely faithful to the original while breaking from canon at key points. Rebirth therefore asks returning players to consider whether familiar outcomes will still occur.
This is a narrative premise, not proof of one particular explanation involving timelines or alternate realities. The games make uncertainty about fate meaningful, but that uncertainty does not settle every question about how the stories connect.

How does Rebirth widen the story beyond the 1997 game?
The trilogy draws on material from across the wider FINAL FANTASY VII universe, not only the original game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said that stories and lore from spin-offs and other titles inform the remake project. The party’s composition also changes in emphasis: characters who were optional in the 1997 game, including Yuffie, are more closely connected to Cloud and the central adventure.
Hamaguchi described the aim as balancing continuity with novelty: “I’m very much dedicated to bringing that to the fans: making it still authentic and still feel like FINAL FANTASY VII, while also making a new fresh experience at the same time.” The statement comes from a Nintendo UK interview.

What does Rebirth’s ending confirm—and what remains interpretation?
The story reaches the Forgotten Capital, a major point associated with fate in the remake project. That endpoint is confirmed by Square Enix’s official description and Nomura’s interview. It does not, on its own, confirm a single definitive reading of every image, event or character state in the ending.
For a careful explanation, separate three things: what the game visibly depicts, what its characters say about those events, and what players infer. A theory about ambiguous imagery may be compelling, but it remains a theory unless the game establishes it more clearly.
