Choose EmuDeck if you want to pick emulators and settings, manage updates in its app, and decide how games appear in your Steam library. Choose RetroDECK if you would rather install one app through Discover and follow a guided setup for storage and Steam integration. Neither is established as universally more stable, faster, or compatible with more games; this is a comparison of documented workflows, not a performance test.
How EmuDeck and RetroDECK differ
EmuDeck describes itself as an installation script that sets up official emulator options and helps manage the configuration. Its installer offers Easy and Custom modes, with choices for storage, emulators, front-end integration, and other settings. RetroDECK is installed as an app through Discover; on first launch, it guides you through choosing where its files live and whether to add the app or game entries to Steam.
In practice, the decision is about how much you want to choose during setup and how you want to reach your games—not a proven difference in game compatibility. The projects’ documentation does not provide a neutral, exhaustive comparison of supported systems.

Choose EmuDeck if you want more setup choices
EmuDeck is a good fit if you want to make configuration decisions rather than accept one guided app workflow. Its installer can ask about ROM and BIOS locations, emulators, EmulationStation or Steam Library integration, RetroAchievements, bezels, aspect ratio, shaders, controller layout, and cloud saves. The installation guide says settings and emulator selections can be changed later, so choosing Easy Mode does not mean every initial default is permanent. See the EmuDeck installation guide for its current installer flow.

Install and organize files on SteamOS
- On the Steam Deck, format an SD card in Game Mode first if needed, then switch to Desktop Mode.
- Download and run the EmuDeck installer, then select Easy or Custom Mode and make the storage and integration choices it presents.
- Place game files in
Emulation/romsand BIOS files inEmulation/bios, as described in the SteamOS installation guide. - If you want individual Steam entries, open Steam ROM Manager and choose the parsers for the games or tools to add. To use a front end instead, the guide describes selecting the EmulationStation-DE parser.
EmuDeck says it installs emulators from Discover or official emulator repositories and creates an organized Emulation folder. It also lists support for Linux/SteamOS, Windows, Mac beta, and Android beta; those platform labels describe the project’s stated availability, not a guarantee that every platform has the same workflow. More detail is in EmuDeck Help.

What to know about game files, SD cards, and controllers
Bring your own game files and BIOS
Neither setup provides games or BIOS files. EmuDeck says users must supply their own ROMs and BIOS; RetroDECK lists game backups and applicable BIOS or firmware among its prerequisites. Rules for copying or making game files vary by country, so use files you are legally entitled to use rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. See EmuDeck Help and the RetroDECK getting-started guide.

An SD card is optional, but formatting matters
Both workflows allow emulation files to live on an SD card. EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide specifies ext4 or btrfs for SD-card compatibility; check the card’s format and SteamOS storage setup before choosing it. The reviewed documentation does not specify a required capacity or particular card model.
External controllers are optional
EmuDeck’s developer announced in its September 29, 2026 release post that version 2.7 added automatic controller mapping for up to four players, including external controllers such as 8BitDo, Xbox, and DualSense. That is a release-specific announcement, not a guarantee for every model or setup. Check the EmuDeck 2.7 announcement and current project documentation if controller mapping is central to your choice.

What changed in EmuDeck 2.7
In a developer announcement posted September 29, 2026, EmuDeck listed several version 2.7 additions: install export and import, more resolution selectors, RetroAchievements updates including new-API and Dolphin setup support, and automatic controller mapping for up to four players. The announcement also mentions Steam Machine improvements. Because this is a Reddit release post rather than a formal versioned documentation page, treat these as claims about that release and confirm current availability in the project’s documentation. The announcement does not establish a comparable feature inventory for RetroDECK, so it cannot support a broader feature-count or compatibility ranking.
Which one should you use?
- Pick EmuDeck if you want to select emulators and settings, choose between Steam ROM Manager and a front end, and handle emulator updates through EmuDeck.
- Pick RetroDECK if you prefer a Discover-installed app with guided first-run storage choices and optional Steam synchronization for ES-DE favorites.
- Decide based on your library workflow: individual Steam entries and a front-end approach are both possible, but the steps differ between the projects.
Neither documented setup establishes a universal advantage in stability, speed, or game compatibility. Choose the workflow you are more comfortable maintaining.
