There is an important caveat: EmuDeck’s published SteamOS guide gives Steam Deck-specific navigation and controls, so check your Steam Machine’s current menus for the exact route into Desktop Mode. Valve identifies SteamOS as the Steam Machine operating system, and EmuDeck lists SteamOS as supported.
What you need before installing
- A Steam Machine running SteamOS and an internet connection to download EmuDeck.
- Game files and any required BIOS files that you are legally entitled to use. EmuDeck configures emulator software; it does not supply ROMs or BIOS files. Laws on copying and using game files vary by country. See EmuDeck’s overview.
- Enough storage for the files you plan to use. EmuDeck’s installer lets you choose where ROMs and BIOS files are stored.
EmuDeck describes itself as “an installation script that helps you get started with emulation.” Its SteamOS installation guide is written for Steam Deck, however, and includes Deck-specific button and menu instructions. Treat the general workflow below as a reference, not confirmation that every Steam Deck control or storage step works identically on Steam Machine.
Choose an installation setup
The installer offers Easy and Custom setup. Easy Mode is the documented recommendation for people new to emulation; Custom Mode exposes more individual choices, including storage location, emulator selection, Steam Library or EmulationStation integration, controller layout, display options, RetroAchievements, and cloud saves. Install EmuDeck on SteamOS
- Open Desktop Mode. Use the Steam Machine’s current interface to find its Desktop Mode option. EmuDeck’s published SteamOS guide describes the Deck’s menu path, so do not assume the same buttons or labels apply to Steam Machine.
- Download the installer from EmuDeck’s official site. Run it from the desktop and follow the prompts in the installer.
- Select Easy or Custom setup. Choose Easy for the documented beginner-oriented defaults, or Custom if you want to choose among the installer’s available options.
- Set the storage location if prompted. The installer lets you choose where ROMs and BIOS files go. If considering an SD card, EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide specifies ext4 or btrfs for SD cards used with its workflow. The reviewed documentation does not confirm Steam Machine-specific removable-storage behavior.
Add your game and BIOS files
EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide uses Emulation/roms for games and Emulation/bios for BIOS files. Place each file in the appropriate system subfolder rather than putting everything into one directory. Folder names, accepted formats, and BIOS requirements vary by system; check the SteamOS guide and its system-specific cheat sheet for the systems you intend to use.

Only use files you are authorized to use. EmuDeck does not provide game or BIOS downloads.
Add games to Steam with Steam ROM Manager
- Open Steam ROM Manager from EmuDeck. When it launches, Steam closes and controls switch to “Lizard Mode.” EmuDeck documents R2 as left-click and L2 as right-click in this state. Those are Deck control labels; on Steam Machine, use the available mouse or controls and confirm their behavior on your device. See the Steam ROM Manager documentation.
- Select the parsers you want. A parser determines which games or tools Steam ROM Manager looks for. Enable only the systems or integrations you want represented in Steam; the EmuDeck guide does not require enabling everything.
- Preview and parse. Preview the proposed entries, then run Parse to build the list of shortcuts from the files and parsers you selected.
- Save the apps to Steam. Review the results, then use Steam ROM Manager’s save option to add the chosen entries as non-Steam shortcuts. The EmuDeck guide also offers an EmulationStation-DE parser if you prefer that frontend.
- Close Steam ROM Manager and return to the gaming interface. The guide’s Deck workflow returns to Game Mode; on Steam Machine, use the equivalent option shown by its current SteamOS interface.
Internal or removable storage?
Internal storage avoids relying on an external device being mounted in the expected location, while removable storage can offer more space without using internal capacity. EmuDeck’s published SteamOS material specifies ext4 or btrfs for SD cards used in its workflow, but the reviewed pages do not establish how Steam Machine handles external drives or whether a particular removable-storage arrangement will work. Verify that behavior on your machine before moving a library there.

Fix common setup problems
Steam ROM Manager does not show the parsers you expect
EmuDeck says its Steam ROM Manager configurations may not have been selected. Check the EmuDeck application’s Manage Emulators section and reset the Steam ROM Manager configurations if needed. The EmuDeck Application guide documents this control.
A game does not appear in the parsed list
- Confirm that you selected the parser for the system or integration you want.
- Check that the game is in the matching subfolder under
Emulation/roms. - Confirm the file format and folder naming against the system-specific cheat sheet in EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide.
A game starts but does not run correctly
Check the system-specific BIOS requirements and confirm any required files are in Emulation/bios. EmuDeck’s overview and guide do not replace the per-system requirements, which can differ.

What is confirmed for Steam Machine
Valve identifies SteamOS as the Steam Machine operating system in its Steam Machine documentation, and EmuDeck lists Linux/SteamOS among its supported platforms in the project overview. The setup sequence above follows EmuDeck’s SteamOS documentation, but that installation page is written specifically for Steam Deck. Its exact Steam Machine Desktop Mode route, control mapping, and external-storage behavior are not confirmed by the cited EmuDeck pages.
