Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Switch 2 Edition officially offers improved graphics and frame rates, but Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have not published exact resolution or frame-rate targets. If you own the original Switch game—physical or digital—you can buy a separate upgrade pack. The enhanced performance features require a Switch 2; buying the Switch 2 Edition does not make an original Switch run those improvements.
What changes in the Switch 2 Edition?
The Pokémon Company says the Switch 2 Edition uses the console’s hardware for improved graphics and frame rate. Nintendo’s US store describes the upgrade as “enhanced resolution and frame rates.” Those are qualitative descriptions: the official material cited here does not specify a resolution target, a guaranteed frame rate, or a controlled retail comparison between the two editions.
A GamesRadar Gamescom preview published September 5, 2025 reported that its Switch 2 demo felt well optimized and held a solid 60 fps without noticeable dips. That is one pre-release session, not a final-game specification or a benchmark against the original Switch version. The preview also said the author had not explored Lumiose City proper, so it should not be treated as evidence of performance across every area or situation.
Which version works on each console?

Nintendo Support says the original game remains playable on Switch after an upgrade, while Switch 2 Edition features and content are playable only on Switch 2. In practical terms, choose based on the console you expect to use: the Switch 2 Edition is compatible with original Switch, but it does not deliver its enhanced performance there.

How to upgrade an existing Switch copy
If you already own Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Switch, you do not need to buy the full game again to access the Switch 2 Edition. Buy the separate upgrade pack; it works with a physical or digital copy, and the original game remains required. Nintendo lists eShop, Nintendo Store, and participating retailers as purchase routes, though routes and availability can vary by region.
- Keep access to the original game. The upgrade pack requires the separately sold base game, whether your copy is physical or digital.
- Buy the Switch 2 upgrade pack. Use Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a participating retailer available in your region. The Pokémon Company’s Japanese page lists the pack’s release as October 16, 2025.
- Install the required software updates. Nintendo says updates must be applied to enjoy added features or content while playing the Switch 2 Edition on Switch 2.
- Play on Switch 2 to get the enhancements. The upgraded game can still be played on original Switch, but without the Switch 2 performance additions.

What do the editions cost?
The following are Japan’s tax-included recommended prices on The Pokémon Company’s official product page, not current prices for other countries. The page lists these recommended totals:

At those Japanese recommended prices, buying the original package game plus the pack totals ¥8,128, the same as the Switch 2 Edition package; the digital game plus pack totals ¥8,100, the same as the digital Switch 2 Edition. These are Japan-specific comparisons. Check the price and purchase route in your own region before deciding, as regional pricing and retailer availability differ.

Which option makes sense for you?
- You own the original game and have a Switch 2: Compare the local upgrade-pack price with the price of a standalone Switch 2 Edition. The pack lets you keep using your existing copy; regional prices determine which costs less.
- You are buying the game and have a Switch 2: Compare the original game plus upgrade pack against the Switch 2 Edition in your region. In Japan, the official recommended totals are equal for package and digital formats.
- You only have an original Switch: The original version provides the relevant play experience on that hardware. The Switch 2 Edition can run on Switch, but its Switch 2 performance additions are not available there.
- You want a precise frame-rate or resolution guarantee: The official descriptions do not provide one. Treat the 60 fps Gamescom report as a pre-release demo impression, not a promise for the retail game.
Formats, storage, and Japan’s scheduled bundle
The Pokémon Company lists package and download versions for the October 16, 2025 releases. Its Japanese product page also lists retailer download-code options, including Amazon.co.jp; that establishes a Japan-specific route, not current stock or availability elsewhere. The Pokémon US buy page lists Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, and participating retailers for US purchases, but retailer options can change.
For Japanese digital versions, the official product page lists at least 5 GB of storage for the Switch software and at least 10 GB for the Switch 2 Edition. It cautions that installation may require additional free space; these stated figures should not be taken as a guarantee for future updates or DLC.

The Japanese official page schedules a physical Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition ＋ M次元ラッシュ all-in-one edition for October 29, 2026, at ¥11,128 including tax. It says the game card contains the Switch 2 Edition and paid DLC. That date is in the future as of October 4, 2026, and the cited listing establishes this Japanese edition only; availability in other regions is not established.
