Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details first, then compare recent reports for that exact game and test representative gameplay if you can. The Verified or Playable label is a useful starting point—not a promise of a particular frame rate, image quality, battery life, or online feature working on your setup.
1. Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page or its entry in your Library and find its Steam Deck compatibility details. Note the displayed label and any caveats about controls, text, or features. Check the status when you are making your decision: Valve said in its March 4, 2022 announcement that compatibility ratings are a snapshot and can change over time as games and the platform change (Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility update).
Read the notes rather than treating the label as a performance grade. Compatibility can involve input, readability, and feature access as well as whether a game launches. Valve’s 2022 announcement gave examples such as keyboard prompts and optional features that did not work; those examples explain why a title might receive a rating, but they should not be treated as a complete description of every current rating decision.
2. Define what “runs well” means for you
A game can start successfully and still miss your needs. Before relying on a label or report, decide which outcomes matter most:

- Reliability: Does it launch consistently, stay stable, and save and reload properly?
- Motion: Is performance acceptably smooth during demanding gameplay, with tolerable stutter and frame pacing?
- Handheld usability: Are the controls practical, and can you read the interface and text on the Deck screen?
- Required features: Do online play, multiplayer, or anti-cheat work if you need them?
- Comfort and endurance: Are heat, fan noise, and battery behavior acceptable for your use?
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton allows many Windows games to run on it. That compatibility layer does not guarantee that every game or every feature will work well (Valve’s SteamOS information).
3. Compare recent reports for the exact game
Look for reports that identify when they were tested and, ideally, the game version, Deck model, SteamOS and Proton versions, graphics settings, and the location or activity used to assess performance. Those details help you judge whether a result applies to your setup. Compare more than one report when possible, especially if a single post says only that the game “runs great.” A brief verdict may leave out a demanding later area, a control limitation, or a workaround.

Steam community curators publish Deck-specific observations, including reports about controls, readability, stutter, frame rate, and battery behavior. For example, see Deck Compatibility and Deck HQ. Treat these as reports by their authors, not as Valve certification or a guarantee for another device or setup. Check dates: some displayed observations are from 2022, so an older report may no longer reflect the current game or software.
4. Test actual gameplay, not just the launcher
If you can play the game on the Deck, spend time beyond the title screen and first menu. Try the parts of the game you expect to play, including a demanding scene, ordinary combat or traversal, and a save and reload. Test multiplayer or anti-cheat features too if they are essential to you.

- Watch for crashes, freezes, or unreliable launches and saves.
- Notice severe stutter or frame-time spikes, especially in demanding scenes; a menu or short opening segment may not reveal them.
- Check that controls work as expected without inconvenient keyboard or mouse input.
- Read interface text and prompts at handheld size.
- Verify required online and other game features directly rather than assuming they work because the game starts.
These checks matter because performance is more than a headline FPS figure. A result from one scene or setup does not establish how the whole game will behave.
5. Tune settings to your priority
If performance is close to acceptable, adjust the game’s graphics options and the Deck’s performance controls. Change one major setting at a time so you can tell what made a difference. A steady, lower frame-rate target may feel better than a higher target that fluctuates; if battery life matters, observe it under the settings and gameplay you actually use instead of inferring it from FPS.

Community reports may give frame-rate or battery figures, but those results belong to the specific game and test conditions reported. Do not assume the same numbers will apply with different settings, scenes, software versions, or Deck hardware.

A different Proton version can resolve a title-specific problem, but switching versions is not a universal fix. First look for a developer notice or a recent report that identifies the same issue and recommends a particular version. For instance, a December 5, 2022 post from the Zeepkist developer described an analogue-input issue and recommended Proton Experimental for that game (Zeepkist’s Steam Deck compatibility update). That is an example of a game-specific workaround, not a reason to force Experimental for every title.

To apply a per-game override when there is a relevant recommendation:
- In the Steam Library, select the game and open its settings.
- Choose Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool and select the recommended Proton version.
- Launch the game and repeat the check for the issue you were trying to fix.
7. Make a verdict tied to your needs and test setup
Choose a conclusion that states both the outcome and the conditions behind it: “works well out of the box,” “works with named compromises,” or “not a good fit for my requirements.” Include the Deck model, software and game versions, settings, and the kind of gameplay you checked when those details are known. Keep your own test results distinct from community reports. Avoid an unqualified “runs perfectly” unless the evidence covers the exact device, software, game build, scenes, and criteria you mean.
