New game releases, online play, digital purchases, downloads, software updates and security support can each end on different schedules. The clearest answer to “How long do PlayStation and Nintendo consoles usually receive games and support?” is that it depends on which kind of support you mean—and the available official examples do not establish a reliable cross-platform lifespan average.
What “games and support” can mean
A console can stop receiving new releases while other services remain available. Likewise, a digital store can stop selling new purchases without immediately removing access to games already bought. These are separate questions:
- New games: whether publishers continue releasing titles for the console.
- Online features: whether multiplayer and other network functions still work.
- Digital purchases: whether the console’s store still sells games or downloadable content.
- Existing downloads and updates: whether owners can redownload purchases or receive game updates.
- Security updates: whether the manufacturer commits to issuing security fixes for a product.
- Backward compatibility: whether a newer console can play some or all of the older console’s games.
These categories should not be treated as a single support end date. The official examples below illustrate different services changing at different times.

The dates are not directly comparable measures of console lifespan: some describe store sales, one describes network features, and the PlayStation UK dates concern minimum security-update periods for specified models.

Does an older console stop getting new games when its store closes?
Not necessarily. A store purchase cutoff, a network-service shutdown and the end of new game releases are distinct events. Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS notices separate eShop purchases from online communication and from the then-available ability to redownload purchases and receive updates. Sony’s PS3 and PS Vita notice likewise concerns future Store purchases; it does not say that every existing game or console feature stops working on that date.
The sources cited here do not establish a consistent last-new-game date for PlayStation or Nintendo generations. They therefore cannot support a general claim that either company’s consoles usually receive new games for a particular number of years.

Can a newer console extend the life of an older game library?
PS4 games on PS5
PlayStation says the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. Sony also identifies exceptions and warns that some features may be unavailable or that certain games may show errors or behave unexpectedly. Compatibility carries much of a library forward, but it is not a guarantee that every title works perfectly. See PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility information.
Switch games on Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play Switch 2 software and compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. It cautions that some original Switch games may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the hardware differs. See Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information.

Backward compatibility can keep access to older games useful after a successor arrives, but it does not mean the older console itself will receive new releases, or that every game transfers without limitations.
Does PlayStation’s 2028 disc announcement mean PlayStation games are ending?
No. In a July 1, 2026 PlayStation.Blog announcement, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement says new games will be available digitally after the transition and that games released or scheduled for release before January 2028 in disc format are unaffected. So how many years should you expect?
There is no comparable official statistic for the usual number of years PlayStation and Nintendo consoles receive games and support. The official information available gives particular service dates and narrowly defined security-update periods, not a generation-by-generation average. For a specific console, check the status of the service you care about—new releases, multiplayer, store purchases, downloads or security updates—rather than relying on one overall “support lifespan.”
