Before buying a PlayStation or Nintendo console late in its generation, start with the specific games you want to play—not the console’s age. Check each game’s compatibility, then confirm that your existing game formats, accessories, account and subscriptions will work on the exact model you’re considering. Finally, compare the current price and bundle in your region with the games and extras you’ll need.
Check your must-play games first
Backward compatibility can make a new console more useful, but it is not a promise that every older game or feature will work. Search the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for each title you care about, including its exact edition. Pay particular attention to games you already own and games you plan to buy.
- PlayStation: Sony says PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 games. Some PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, while some PS4 features may not be available on PS5. Sony’s figure is a manufacturer description of catalog size, not an independently measured count or a guarantee for every title. Check Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance.
- Nintendo: Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible because the hardware differs. Some games have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2; check the individual game for its terms. Check Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 compatibility guide.
Neither compatibility statement means every older console generation’s games carry forward. Sony’s cited guidance addresses PS4 games on PS5; it does not establish that PS1, PS2 or PS3 game discs work on PS5.
Match your games to the exact console model
Before paying, verify the console model and how you own your games. Physical and digital libraries behave differently during a transition.

If you own PlayStation discs
Check that the PS5 model you are buying has a disc drive. Sony describes using PS4 discs on compatible PS5 consoles; a digital library is accessed through the account and library process described in Sony’s guidance. Confirm the specific model rather than assuming every PS5 accepts discs.
If you own digital games
Check that you can sign in to the account that owns the games, and review the platform’s instructions for accessing the library on the new console. On Nintendo systems, Nintendo says linked accounts can be used on Switch 2 and eShop funds are shared across linked consoles. Nintendo also documents virtual game cards and their management across two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time; follow its current instructions for setup and use.

Check upgrades title by title
Do not assume an older game’s upgrade is automatic or free. Sony describes upgrade options for eligible games, while Nintendo notes that some Switch games offer free updates or paid Switch 2 upgrades. Check the game’s listing and the platform’s terms before including an upgrade in your budget.
Check accessories and features you expect to reuse
Compatibility can depend on both the accessory and the game. Make a short list of the controllers, headsets, cameras, storage devices and other peripherals you already own, then verify each item against the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance.

- PlayStation controllers: Sony says DualShock 4 and licensed controllers can be used with supported PS4 games on PS5; do not assume they work with every PS5 game.
- PlayStation VR: PS VR play on PS5 requires a PS VR headset and specified PS4 camera equipment with an adapter. Check Sony’s requirements before relying on existing VR hardware.
- Nintendo accessories and features: Nintendo’s guide covers Switch software, accessories and features. Check your exact accessory and game rather than assuming universal transfer to Switch 2.
If a peripheral is important to your setup, confirm its compatibility before choosing a console bundle or buying replacement equipment.
Confirm account and subscription continuity
A console change does not necessarily mean starting over with a new account or subscription. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account can be used on Switch 2, eShop funds are shared across linked systems, and an existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can be used on linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. Some benefits are Switch 2-specific, including the GameCube – Nintendo Classics library. Review Nintendo’s current service details to confirm which benefits apply to your account and games.

For either platform, make sure you can access the account that owns your digital games and subscriptions. A console’s compatibility with a game does not by itself establish that a particular subscription benefit, save or extra feature transfers; check the relevant account and game information.

There is no universal price verdict for a console late in its generation: local pricing, inventory and bundles can change, and the available evidence does not establish a current global comparison. Check the retailer listing for your region and compare the same overall setup, not just the console sticker price.

- Console model and whether it includes the disc drive you need.
- Must-play games not already in your library.
- Any paid game upgrades, subscription or service you expect to use.
- Replacement or additional controllers, storage or other required accessories.
- Taxes and any bundle items you would otherwise buy separately.

Decide whether to buy now or wait
“Late in its generation” alone does not show whether a console is a poor buy. The practical question is whether the games and play features available now suit you at the price currently offered. Consider what you actually want to play and how you want to play it—handheld, on a TV, in local multiplayer or with multiplatform games—rather than assuming a performance advantage that has not been established here.
If you are considering waiting, distinguish confirmed manufacturer announcements from speculation. The sources here do not establish a definitive successor timetable, end-of-generation date or how long either platform will receive new games. Check the platform’s official news and your local retailer’s current listings before making a timing decision.
