To use a non-Steam game or app on Steam Deck, install it in Desktop Mode first, then add it to Steam as a library shortcut so you can launch it from Gaming Mode. The shortcut does not install the game, deliver its updates, or establish ownership through Steam.
Install the app in Desktop Mode

Open the Steam menu, choose Power, then select Switch to Desktop. To return later, use the desktop’s Return to Gaming Mode link, or log off through the system menus.

In Desktop Mode, install the app using a method that supports Steam Deck’s Arch Linux environment. Steam describes Discover Software Center as the graphical way to install apps; it uses Flatpak, with applications and their content stored on writable storage. Steam says this makes them less likely to be affected by SteamOS system updates. See Steam’s Desktop FAQ and basic-use guide.
Desktop Mode remains SteamOS, not a Windows desktop. Check that the app supports the Linux environment; availability through Discover is one useful way to find desktop software, but the right installation method depends on the app.

Add the installed app to your Steam library

Open Steam while still in Desktop Mode.

Select Add a Game in the lower-left corner, then choose Add a Non-Steam Game.

Choose the installed application from the list and add it. Steam says the entry will appear in the library’s non-Steam tab in Gaming Mode.

Return to Gaming Mode and launch the library entry.
This process adds a shortcut to the app already installed on the Deck. Steam Support explicitly says, “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” Steam does not provide updates for that app through the shortcut, and the entry does not make it proof of ownership for your Steam account. Updates and management remain with the app’s original source. See Steam Support’s explanation of non-Steam library entries.

Get around Desktop Mode and adjust controls
You can use the Deck’s controls for Desktop Mode navigation while Steam is running. The trackpad can act as a mouse, and Steam + X opens the on-screen keyboard while Steam runs. Some tasks may be easier with a physical keyboard and mouse, but they are not required for the install-and-add workflow. Details are in Steam’s Desktop FAQ.
For a library entry, open its controls settings to view or edit a layout, or browse community layouts. The available controls can depend on the app and its needs; adding a shortcut does not itself configure a working layout.

Troubleshoot an app that will not launch or is unstable
Check compatibility settings
Steam’s software troubleshooting guide documents selecting a Steam Play compatibility tool, such as Proton, for a specific game under Properties > Compatibility. This is a setting to try, not a guarantee that every third-party game, launcher, or installer will work. Steam’s Deck Verified labels—Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown—describe tested Steam titles; a rating for a Steam title does not establish compatibility for a separately installed copy or third-party launcher. Try Steam’s basic stability steps

Install available system updates, then restart the Deck.

Exit or disable other third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and check whether the problem persists.

If the non-Steam application remains unstable, contact that application’s support team.
Manage internal and microSD storage
To manage internal and connected storage, open Steam > Settings > Storage. Steam says a microSD card must be formatted from SteamOS before use. Its basic-use guide describes UHS-I Class 3 or better as supported; UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported. Choose storage based on the space your particular games and apps require rather than assuming a library shortcut contains the app’s files. See Steam’s basic-use and troubleshooting guide.
