Buy a current-generation console if it already plays the games you want and its format suits how you play. Consider waiting if your current setup is good enough and you prefer to compare next-generation consumer prices, specifications, and release dates after they are officially announced. As of October 2026, Microsoft has announced a developer-hardware milestone for Project Helix, but not a consumer launch date; no verified next PlayStation consumer launch date is established here.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of specific games you expect to play in the next year, then confirm that each is available on the console you are considering. Check official store pages and publisher details: platform libraries, release plans, and availability can change, and a console’s general reputation is not a substitute for checking individual titles.
If the games you want are already available on a current system, buying now gives you access without waiting for an unannounced consumer launch. If your list depends on future releases or features that have not been detailed, waiting preserves the option to compare once those details are public.
What does waiting for the next generation actually mean?
Project Helix is announced, but a retail date is not
In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft said it plans to begin shipping alpha hardware to developers in 2027. Do not infer a PlayStation launch date
No verified next PlayStation consumer launch date is established here. Console-cycle expectations are not a substitute for an official announcement. If your decision depends on a particular launch window, wait for Sony to confirm one rather than treating speculation as a date.
Set a practical waiting threshold
Waiting makes more sense when your existing setup still meets your needs and you are comfortable postponing a purchase without knowing the next system’s retail date, price, or final specifications. Buying now makes more sense when the games and play experience you want are available today and the cost fits your budget.

These are different platform strengths, not a ranking. Choose based on the games, format, and existing library that matter to you.
Check what carries over from your current setup
Games, saves, and upgrades are separate questions
Do not assume that an account library, saved progress, or a game license automatically transfers in the way you want. Check compatibility and transfer instructions for each important title. On Switch 2, Nintendo says compatible Switch games may have free updates or paid upgrades, with changes varying by game; consult Nintendo’s current title-specific information and the publisher’s notes. Subscriptions provide access, not necessarily ownership
Sony describes PlayStation Plus as offering a changing library of PS5 and PS4 games across membership tiers. Its US PS5 page says monthly games remain playable while the member remains subscribed. Catalogues, tiers, and prices can change, so check the current offer in your market and do not treat subscription access as permanent ownership. Sony’s US PS5 page.
Keep accessory compatibility title- and item-specific
Nintendo’s compatibility information lists some original Switch accessories as usable and others as incompatible. For example, original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to it, and the original Switch dock is not compatible. Calculate the full cost, not just the console price
Compare the same time period and include the costs that apply to your use. Prices vary by market and date, so check local listings and current platform terms rather than relying on an old price comparison.
- Hardware: Compare the exact model and its included accessories.
- Games: Include the titles you actually plan to buy, including any paid upgrade needed for a version you want.
- Online access: If multiplayer or a subscription catalogue matters, check the current plan, price, and conditions in your region.
- Storage: Nintendo specifies 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2 and supports microSD Express expansion. Conventional microSD cards are not compatible for Switch 2 expansion, so account for the required card type if you expect to add storage. Nintendo Switch 2 product information.
- Accessories: Include controllers, a suitable dock or display setup, and any replacement accessories your household needs; confirm compatibility before counting existing gear as reusable.

Use this decision checklist
- List your must-play games. Confirm platform and release availability from official store or publisher information.
- Check your existing library. Verify compatibility, saves, upgrades, and accessory support for the titles and equipment you care about.
- Match the play style. Decide whether handheld and tabletop modes matter, or whether you primarily want a home-console setup.
- Price the whole setup. Add hardware, games, subscriptions, storage, and required accessories using current prices for your market.
- Choose your tolerance for uncertainty. If an unconfirmed future date is acceptable and your current setup is adequate, waiting lets you assess announced consumer details later. If you want to play now and a current console meets your needs, buying now avoids making the decision depend on an unknown launch.
