Look for the setting in its current menu and adjust it directly if it is still available. For broader settings changes, Sony’s Restore Default Settings option shows which settings it will affect and does not erase user or game data. Avoid Reset PS5 or reinstalling system software as routine fixes: those options delete data.
Identify what changed before resetting anything
A different-looking screen or setting does not, on its own, prove an update reset it. Note whether the issue is a changed preference, a menu you cannot find, a missing feature, a failed update, or a malfunction. Also check whether the console is using beta software.
To see the installed version, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Check Sony’s PS5 system software information for details relevant to that version. The available support information does not identify which update a particular reader installed or establish what caused an individual setting to change.
Try the individual setting first
Open the menu where the setting currently belongs and change it directly if it is available. This is the least disruptive option for a single preference. Menu locations and features can depend on the system software version, so do not assume a setting was removed or moved without checking the console and version-specific information.

When to use Restore Default Settings
If visual or audio defaults are the problem, or you deliberately want to restore a wider set of settings, use Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings. Sony says the console displays the settings that will be affected before you confirm. Review that list: the option may affect settings beyond the one you noticed. Sony states that restoring defaults does not erase user or game data.
Choose a Safe Mode option for the symptom
If system features or performance remain abnormal, Sony lists separate Safe Mode tools that may be relevant. They are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes for a changed preference.

- Clear System Software Cache: Sony lists this for system feature issues or performance drops.
- Rebuild Database: This scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. Sony says it can help with system feature issues or a deleted game icon that still appears on Home.
See Sony’s PS5 Safe Mode guidance for instructions. These options are distinct from resetting the console or reinstalling its system software.
If the system software update failed
Use this branch when the update did not complete, rather than for an ordinary settings change. In Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system software update, choose View Error Info, then select Try Again. If repeated attempts fail, Sony provides a manual update procedure using a computer and a USB drive.

Sony’s undated US support page, accessed in 2026, specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. Follow Sony’s official USB update instructions and use only the update file provided there. This requirement applies to the manual update route, not routine settings troubleshooting.
Know which options erase data
Restore Default Settings is not the same as resetting or reinstalling the console. Check the consequences before choosing a more destructive recovery option.

Sony describes reinstalling system software as deleting all data on the console. Back up data before considering that route, and do not use Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) just to restore one setting.

When to contact PlayStation support
If a fault persists after suitable software troubleshooting, Sony’s PlayStation support page points to PlayStation Repairs diagnostics. A changed preference alone does not establish that repair is needed; describe the exact symptom and system software version when seeking help. These menu paths and instructions are from Sony’s US support pages, and may vary by region or software version.
