What 8,000 Hz Keyboard Polling Rate Does—and Whether You Can Feel the Difference

An 8,000 Hz keyboard has a nominal 0.125 ms reporting interval, but polling rate is only one part of input latency—and no cited study proves everyone can feel the difference.

An 8,000 Hz keyboard can report its state up to 8,000 times per second, giving it a nominal 0.125 ms interval between report opportunities. At 1,000 Hz, that interval is 1 ms. The shorter interval can reduce one part of input timing, but it is not the keyboard’s total key-to-screen latency—and it does not guarantee a difference you will notice in a game.

What does 8,000 Hz mean on a keyboard?

Hz means events per second. A keyboard polling at 8,000 Hz can report its state up to 8,000 times each second; the corresponding interval between report opportunities is 0.125 ms. At 1,000 Hz, the interval is 1 ms. The difference between those intervals is 0.875 ms, derived from the rates rather than measured as a whole-system response time. CORSAIR’s polling-rate explainer uses its K70 RGB PRO as an 8,000 Hz example.

That 0.125 ms figure is not a promise that a keypress reaches the game or screen in 0.125 ms. Polling rate describes the reporting schedule. Switch actuation, keyboard scanning and processing, the connection, the computer, the game, and the display all contribute to the response a player experiences. Avoid treating a polling interval as a complete latency measurement.

Can you feel the difference between 1,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz?

It is possible that a particular player and setup could reveal a benefit, but the available evidence does not establish that people reliably feel the difference. Nor does it show that the change is impossible to perceive. The higher rate shortens the nominal interval; whether that produces a perceptible or practically useful change depends on the keyboard and the rest of the system.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Measurement boundaries matter. RTINGS’ keyboard latency method starts at simulated finger contact and measures through switch actuation and keyboard processing until the input reaches the computer. Razer’s Huntsman V3 Pro 8KHz page defines its reported measurement from switch actuation to receipt at the host USB port, and cautions that end-to-end latency may differ. An end-to-end test that includes the game and visible display response covers a broader path; igor’sLAB’s discussion of input-device latency explains that distinction.

These measurements answer different questions, so their figures are not directly interchangeable. A sub-millisecond change in one part of the chain does not by itself show that a player will see a faster response or gain an advantage in every game. The cited sources do not provide a controlled human-perception study comparing 1,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz keyboard polling.

How to interpret published latency figures

Figure or method What it represents Qualification
0.125 ms at 8,000 Hz; 1 ms at 1,000 Hz Nominal intervals between report opportunities Arithmetic derived from the polling frequencies explained by CORSAIR; not whole-system latency
0.58 ms average Razer’s reported latency figure for the Huntsman V3 Pro 8KHz Manufacturer measurement on an undated product page; Razer says its comparison used 20 measurements, set all keyboards to 0.1 mm actuation and 8,000 Hz, and measured from switch actuation to receipt at the host USB port. Razer says end-to-end latency may differ. Source
200 samples per test RTINGS’ sample count for its keyboard latency testing Methodology updated February 5, 2024; RTINGS averages the samples and plots them to show outliers and consistency. Source

RTINGS uses a solenoid to emulate a finger and maximizes the keyboard’s available low-latency settings, including its maximum polling rate. Its procedure is useful for comparing keyboard latency under defined test conditions, but it is not a test of whether people can consciously distinguish polling rates.

What should you compare before buying?

  • Test boundary: Check whether a latency figure runs from key contact, switch actuation, or all the way to visible on-screen response. Numbers measured across different portions of the input chain do not make a like-for-like comparison.
  • Consistency as well as averages: Averages can conceal variation. RTINGS’ method plots 200 samples to show outliers and consistency.
  • Switch and actuation settings: These affect a comparison. Razer’s 0.58 ms average was reported with all keyboards set to 0.1 mm actuation, so it should not be read as a universal result for every configuration.
  • Supported rate and connection mode: Confirm that the exact keyboard and mode you intend to use support the advertised rate, and that the setting is active. Razer says the Huntsman V3 Pro 8KHz rate is adjustable in Synapse.
  • How you use the keyboard: For ordinary computer use, CORSAIR says high polling rates are unnecessary. For gaming, consider polling rate alongside layout, switch feel, actuation options, and price rather than treating the headline number as a complete measure of responsiveness.

Examples of 8,000 Hz keyboards

The Razer Huntsman V3 Pro 8KHz and CORSAIR K70 RGB PRO are manufacturer-documented examples of keyboards offering 8,000 Hz polling. They are examples to compare, not proof that one will feel faster or suit every player. Check each model’s supported connection and settings, and compare its relevant latency measurements using the test boundary and conditions described above.
