How to Choose a Laptop for School: The Specs That Matter Most

Check course compatibility first, then choose the RAM, SSD storage and platform that fit your schoolwork.

Start with your school’s and course’s software requirements—not a brand or a processor label. A Windows or Mac laptop with a modern midrange processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 256–512 GB SSD is a practical starting point for many students. A Chromebook may be enough for browser-based work, but it is not a safe default for a major that depends on specialist desktop software.

Check course compatibility before comparing specs

Ask your school, department or course which operating systems and applications you must use. Confirm whether the software runs on Windows, macOS or ChromeOS, and whether it supports the laptop’s processor architecture. A device can meet general hardware targets and still be unsuitable if a required application will not run on it.

Requirements differ by institution and major. Ramapo College of New Jersey’s July 27, 2026 guidance recommends Windows for some business courses and permits Windows or Mac for other students. Wharton Computing warns that some applications in its environment do not work on Chromebooks or ARM-based laptops, including Snapdragon models. Bob Jones University’s 2026–27 requirements do not accept Chromebooks or other devices that cannot run Windows or Mac.

These are institution-specific examples, not universal rules. If a department names a particular operating system, processor family, graphics capability or minimum configuration, treat that requirement as more important than a general buying guide.

How much RAM does a school laptop need?

RAM affects how comfortably a computer handles several apps and browser tabs at once. For light browsing, documents and email, 8 GB can be adequate: Microsoft’s US student-oriented Windows buying guide says it is fine for light browsing and most tasks. For a more flexible everyday laptop, 16 GB is a sensible target. Several current university recommendations set 16 GB as a minimum or preferred configuration.

  • 8 GB: A lower-cost option for basic browser and document work, provided your school’s applications support it.
  • 16 GB: A practical target for multitasking, video calls and common productivity applications.
  • 32 GB or more: Consider it when your department requires it or your workload involves resource-intensive applications, large datasets, video editing or other demanding projects. Wharton Computing recommends 32 GB for intensive work in its environment.

Do not treat the highest figure you see in a university’s recommendations as a requirement for every student. Match memory to your workload, then check the exact course specification.

How much storage should you get?

Choose storage according to how many applications, projects and media files you expect to keep on the laptop. A 256 GB SSD is a documented baseline in several student guides; 512 GB leaves more room for locally stored apps and projects. Cloud storage can reduce how much you need to keep on the device, but access to it depends on your school’s services and your internet connection.

  • 256 GB SSD: A reasonable baseline for lighter use, particularly if you store files online or externally.
  • 512 GB SSD: A more comfortable general-purpose choice if you expect to install applications and keep coursework locally.
  • 1 TB or more: Consider it for large media files, substantial projects or a course recommendation that calls for it. Wharton Computing recommends a 1 TB SSD for its environment.

Institutional recommendations illustrate why there is no single universal minimum. Hertfordshire recommends at least 256 GB of storage, while Ramapo’s recommended Windows configuration has a 512 GB SSD. Bob Jones University’s 2026–27 requirements specify at least a 512 GB SSD.

Which processor and platform make sense?

For ordinary schoolwork, a modern midrange processor is generally a more useful target than paying extra for a high-end chip you may not use. Microsoft’s student buying guide lists Intel Core i5/i7 and AMD Ryzen 5/7 among its mid-level choices. Ramapo’s Windows minimum names Core 5 or Ryzen 5, while Hertfordshire recommends an i5 or Ryzen 5 or better for specialist software.

Those labels do not guarantee compatibility or identical performance across generations. Follow your department’s exact guidance if it specifies a processor, operating system or architecture. In particular, confirm ARM support before choosing a Snapdragon-based Windows laptop if your course depends on specialized software.

Windows or Mac

Choose between them based on required applications and support, not a general claim that one is better for school. Some institutions and courses specify Windows; others support both Windows and macOS. Check whether your department’s software, exams, labs and IT support work on the system you plan to buy.

Is a Chromebook good enough for school?

It can suit writing, email, browsing and other work done in a browser. It may not run specialist desktop programs or fit an institution’s managed IT environment. Confirm compatibility with your school before buying one; some institutions explicitly advise against Chromebooks or rule them out for their courses.

What should you compare beyond the headline specs?

A laptop is also something you carry and use for hours. Compare the details that affect your routine, and check whether the school provides software or services you would otherwise pay for.

  • Battery life: Treat manufacturer figures as estimates, not guaranteed classroom runtime. Microsoft notes that battery life varies with settings, usage and other factors.
  • Weight and screen size: A smaller, lighter laptop is easier to carry; a larger display may be more comfortable for creative work. Balance portability with the space you need to work.
  • Keyboard and touchpad: If possible, try them before buying. Comfort matters when you type notes and assignments all day.
  • Webcam, microphone and Wi-Fi: Check that they meet your school’s requirements for calls and coursework. Hertfordshire calls for a webcam, microphone and built-in Wi-Fi; Bob Jones University specifies 802.11ac or newer Wi-Fi.
  • Ports: Check for the connections you need for coursework or accessories, and whether you would need an adapter.
  • Warranty: Compare coverage and repair terms as part of the total cost. Wharton Computing recommends considering coverage for accidental damage or technical problems; that does not make an added plan necessary for every buyer.

Before paying for bundled software or cloud storage, check what your institution supplies. The University of Hertfordshire says most of its students receive Microsoft applications and OneDrive access; that benefit is specific to that university and should not be assumed elsewhere.

Choose a configuration by workload

Workload Platform to consider RAM Storage What to check
Browser, documents and email Chromebook only if your school and applications support it; otherwise Windows or Mac 8 GB can cover light tasks 256 GB SSD can be a baseline; cloud storage may reduce local needs Course software, school IT requirements and the comfort of the keyboard and screen
Many tabs, video calls and common productivity apps Windows or Mac, chosen for course compatibility 16 GB is a practical target 512 GB SSD gives more room for local apps and projects Battery estimates, weight, webcam, microphone and ports
Engineering, design, programming, video editing or datasets The operating system and processor architecture required by the department 32 GB or the amount specified by the department 1 TB or more if projects and media are large, or as specified Specialist software, processor and graphics requirements, and support for your chosen platform

This is a workload-based comparison, not a set of universal minimums. Your institution’s requirements take precedence.

Set a budget around requirements, not unused performance

These recommendations do not establish a dependable current price range, so compare actual configurations available to you rather than relying on a generic student-laptop budget. Avoid paying for performance your coursework does not need, but do not choose a cheaper configuration that misses a course requirement. Compare the full cost, including any necessary adapters, warranty coverage and software you must buy yourself. Check whether your school or the manufacturer currently offers eligible education pricing; availability and terms vary.
