Gears of War: E-Day is the series’ first game built with Unreal Engine 5. Its named technologies—Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite—are intended to make lighting, shadows and environmental detail more ambitious, while announced PC options include several upscalers and frame generation. What those features will mean for frame rates on a particular PC is not yet established: Xbox’s 4K, up-to-60-FPS figure is a product target, not a guarantee for every system or scene, and final PC requirements and independent launch-build benchmarks are not available in the cited material.
What Unreal Engine 5 changes in E-Day
The Coalition and Xbox identify Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite as important parts of the game’s visual technology. In broad terms, these systems address lighting, shadows and the amount of detail that can be represented in a scene. They describe the intended rendering approach, not a measured performance result: the available sources do not show how much frame rate any feature costs in E-Day.
Lumen: environment-responsive lighting
Epic describes Lumen as part of E-Day’s ultra-realistic lighting, while NVIDIA characterizes the implementation as ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. Its role is to make lighting respond across the environment, contributing to how spaces and objects are lit. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison with Lumen on and off, so they do not establish a specific visual improvement or frame-rate impact.
MegaLights: dynamic shadows
Xbox says E-Day is among the first games to ship with MegaLights and connects the technology to dynamic shadows and the game’s light-and-dark atmosphere. NVIDIA says the implementation can render ray-traced shadows from up to 100 light sources. That is NVIDIA’s description of the feature, not an independently measured count or benchmark for representative gameplay scenes.

Nanite: detailed environments and characters
Epic identifies Nanite as the source of film-quality assets. Xbox Wire reported that Kate Rayner, then The Coalition’s Studio Technical Director, said E-Day had over 100 times more environment and character detail than Gears 5. NVIDIA separately claims Nanite raises object detail and fidelity by up to 100X compared with Gears 5. These are attributed developer and vendor comparisons; they are not the same measured metric, and they do not mean every asset or frame is universally 100 times more detailed.
Destruction, volumetrics and particles
NVIDIA also says engine advances enable real-time destruction, broader volumetric effects and particles, and larger set pieces. The cited material does not quantify the hardware cost of those effects or establish how they change performance in particular scenes.

What Xbox has announced for PC
Xbox describes E-Day as built with Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12, with hardware ray tracing and broad PC optimization. Its July 2026 announcement lists these rendering and performance options for supported PC storefronts and systems:

These features give players different ways to trade image rendering workload, displayed frame rate and latency, but an announcement alone does not establish which option looks best or performs best on a given GPU. Frame generation and upscaling should not be treated as equivalent to native rendering: a useful launch-build comparison would need to report image quality and frame rate separately, alongside latency, hardware compatibility, and shader or loading behavior where Advanced Shader Delivery is supported.

What the 4K and 60 FPS target does—and does not—tell you
Xbox’s June 2026 product description says the game is “Built for modern performance with 4K resolution and up to 60FPS across Campaign and Multiplayer.” This is Xbox’s stated product target. It is not a guarantee that every PC configuration will render at 4K or sustain 60 FPS in every scene; the cited statement does not specify a PC configuration or test conditions.
Because final PC requirements and independent launch-build tests are not established in the available official material, there is no supported basis here for predicting frame rates by graphics card, recommending a minimum GPU, or ranking the announced upscalers. For a practical PC comparison, look for tests that state the GPU, CPU, resolution, graphics settings and whether ray tracing, upscaling or frame generation is enabled. Without those details, a headline frame-rate figure is difficult to apply to your own PC.

How to interpret PC hardware compatibility
Epic’s UE5.8 documentation lists Windows/DirectX and GPU-family compatibility for engine rendering features. For Lumen and MegaLights it names AMD RX 6000-series or newer, Intel Arc A-series or newer, and NVIDIA RTX 2000-series or newer. This is engine-feature compatibility guidance—not E-Day’s minimum requirement, recommended specification or a promise of playable performance.
In practice, compatibility and performance answer different questions. An engine feature’s listed GPU family can help explain which kinds of hardware the feature supports in the engine, but it cannot tell you what E-Day’s launch settings will require, what resolution or frame rate a card can manage, or whether an upscaler is supported on a particular configuration. Use game-specific requirements and tests for those decisions once they are published.

Are E-Day’s PC requirements final?
No final launch requirements are established in the cited material. The official open-beta FAQ, published August 3, 2026, explicitly says: “Please note: These are not our launch specifications. We will update with final specifications ahead of the launch date.” Do not treat beta PC specifications as the final minimum or recommended requirements.
The same distinction applies to generic Unreal Engine documentation: it describes engine capabilities and feature compatibility, not the game’s minimum settings or performance on a specific PC. The sources cited here also do not establish independent benchmarks from the launch build. Xbox’s announced October 6 launch was still upcoming as of October 3, 2026, the date of the latest evidence cited here.
