A game can cost different amounts because you may be comparing different edition contents, platform-specific prices, regional pricing, tax treatment, or a temporary sale. To make a fair comparison, match the edition, platform, storefront region, currency, tax basis, and date—not just the game title.
Why the same game has different prices
Editions include different packages
“Standard,” “Deluxe,” and “Ultimate” are package labels, not a universal measure of value. Higher editions may bundle expansions, downloadable content, in-game currency, cosmetics, or bonus materials. Check the included-content list and whether an item requires ownership of the base game before paying extra. For example, the Steam listing for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred shows Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions with additional expansion access and bonus items in higher tiers. Its changing listed prices and discounts illustrate the packages, not a lasting price recommendation.
Platforms and storefronts have separate pricing controls
A publisher or developer can configure prices through platform-specific systems, so there is no single universal conversion from one platform’s price to another. Microsoft’s publishing guidance describes a base price converted for markets, with optional market overrides; its guide reports reach across more than 200 markets, not that every game is available at a distinct price in each one. Microsoft’s pricing and availability guidance also distinguishes temporary sales from permanent price changes.
A platform difference is not automatically evidence of a particular cause such as production costs or platform fees. A title-specific example is Urban Games’ May 8, 2025 announcement of suggested retail prices for Transport Fever 3: Standard was $49.99 / €49.99 on PC and $59.99 / €59.99 on consoles; Deluxe was $64.99 / €64.99 on PC and $74.99 / €74.99 on consoles. Regional prices are not simple currency conversions
Publishers may set or adjust prices market by market. Epic says its suggested regional prices for developers draw on exchange rates, local purchasing power, and industry experience: “We also provide suggested regional prices for developers based on regional exchange rates, local purchasing power, and industry experience.” That is Epic Games Store Support’s explanation, not a formula that guarantees a particular price. Epic reports regional-pricing support across more than 190 countries and over 30 territories; this is the scope of its support, not a count of distinct prices or markets for every game. Steam also groups some markets for USD pricing when a native currency is not supported. Steamworks says currencies that are not live are not used for customer store purchases; where Steam does not support a native currency, it presents and charges in USD, except in countries geographically within Europe, where it uses euros. Its documentation also describes region groups where developers may offer different, usually discounted, USD prices. Currency changes do not necessarily revise every existing listing automatically. Microsoft says conversion rates used for base prices are adjusted from time to time, but existing wholesale or suggested retail prices do not change solely because those rates have changed; publishers must make adjustments. This describes Microsoft’s pricing process, not the reason behind every price on every store.
Tax and sale timing change the amount you see
Stores can handle tax differently, and the display price may not equal the checkout total. In its comparison of Steam and the Fenris Store, EVE Online support says Steam includes applicable regional tax in the displayed price, while the Fenris Store may add VAT or other taxes at checkout. This is specific to those stores and applicable markets, not a universal rule. When tax or payment-currency conversion may be added later, compare final checkout totals. A discount can make two otherwise comparable listings look different if they are checked at different times. Microsoft distinguishes temporary sale pricing from permanent changes; a sale or promotion should be treated as time-limited unless the storefront says otherwise. Check both listings on the same day and note whether the displayed figure is a sale price.
How to compare two game listings fairly
- Match the edition. Read the included-content list for each listing, including expansions, DLC, cosmetics, currency, soundtrack, or artbook. Check for a base-game requirement.
- Match the platform and storefront. Confirm whether each offer is for PC, console, or another platform, and identify the actual store selling it. Prices can be configured separately.
- Match the region and currency. Confirm the storefront region and currency shown. A regional price may reflect more than a direct exchange-rate conversion, and some stores use supported currency groups.
- Check tax and the checkout total. See whether applicable tax is included in the displayed price or added later. Use the final total where possible, including any payment-currency conversion that may apply.
- Compare at the same time. Record whether either listing is on sale or under a promotion; a temporary discount is not the same as a permanent price difference.
What a price difference does—and does not—tell you
A higher price may reflect more bundled content, a different platform listing, a publisher-set regional price, tax treatment, or a current promotion. Platform guidance explains what publishers and developers can configure; it does not identify the reason for every individual gap. The cited examples do not establish a typical price difference between editions, platforms, or regions, and they do not prove that platform fees, production costs, or hardware costs explain a particular game’s price. Check the local listing and checkout total when you are ready to buy.
