Alan Wake 2 is not a straightforward continuation of the original’s action-thriller formula: it slows down for stretches of tension, makes Saga Anderson a second lead, and places horror closer to the centre of both story and gameplay. If the first game’s action rhythm is your main reason for liking it, that shift is a meaningful caveat.
How Alan Wake 2 compares with Remedy’s older games
The sequel preserves Remedy’s interest in layered, self-aware storytelling and mixing different media, but changes the experience around them. Xbox Wire’s interview with creative director Sam Lake describes live-action elements, two protagonists with distinct stories and two dimensions. Remedy’s stated aim was to bring horror, story and gameplay together more tightly than in its earlier games; that is a creative intention, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the result. Sam Lake’s explanation of the survival-horror direction lays out that goal.
In practical terms, expect a survival-horror game rather than a faster-paced action thriller. PC Gamer’s review describes long, quiet stretches punctuated by brief bursts of violence. That pacing gives the game room to build unease, but may feel less satisfying if you mainly want the original Alan Wake’s action-forward rhythm. The sequel is a stronger fit for fans who enjoy Remedy’s atmosphere and narrative experimentation, and who are willing to trade some of that action cadence for sustained tension. Do you need to play Alan Wake, Control or AWE first?
No. Remedy’s official Alan Wake 2 FAQ addresses whether the original Alan Wake or Control and its AWE expansion are required; treat them as optional context, not prerequisites. You can start with the sequel without completing those games.

- For Alan’s continuing story: Alan Wake Remastered is the most directly relevant catch-up choice. The original gives you more context for Alan and the Dark Presence.
- For the shared universe: Control and its AWE expansion add context about the Federal Bureau of Control and its connection to Alan Wake. Remedy has described the games as sharing a fictional universe and said AWE set up Alan Wake 2.
Choose either route for added context, not because the sequel requires homework. Saga Anderson’s parallel story is also a major part of Alan Wake 2, so the game is not simply a retelling of Alan’s earlier adventure.
Where can you play Alan Wake 2?
Remedy’s 2024 annual report lists the game’s October 27, 2023 release on PC through the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Remedy’s H1 2024 financial report records an announced physical Deluxe Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as a Collector’s Edition produced by Limited Run Games. Those reports establish release platforms and announced editions, not current stock or pricing; check a live storefront or retailer listing for your region before buying.
