TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) sensors read a controller stick’s movement through changes in magnetism, without the rubbing carbon contact used by a traditional potentiometer. That can eliminate drift caused by wear at that contact—but it cannot guarantee that a controller will never drift. Mechanical centering, calibration, dirt, damage, and other faults can still cause unwanted input.
What stick drift means
Stick drift is unwanted movement reported while you are not moving the stick—for example, a character or camera moves, or a menu scrolls by itself. It is different from jitter, which SCUF describes as erratic signal noise, though the symptoms can overlap. SCUF Gaming explains the distinction in its drift and jitter guide.
How TMR sensors work
In a conventional potentiometer stick, a wiper moves across a carbon surface to measure resistance as the stick moves. Wear on that contact can create dust or gaps that interfere with the signal. TMR replaces this contact-based sensing method with magnetic sensing: GameSir describes its TMR sensors as detecting minute changes in magnetic orientation through the quantum tunneling effect, without physical friction. GameSir’s technology page and SCUF’s explanation describe the underlying distinction.
That change addresses one possible source of drift, not every part that can fail. The stick still relies on a physical mechanism to return to center, while calibration and signal processing affect how the controller interprets its position. A weak return spring, dirt, or damage can also contribute to unwanted movement. Thrustmaster’s joystick-drift guidance identifies wear, dirt, and return-spring problems among possible causes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TMR vs. Hall effect vs. potentiometer
| Sensor type | How it reads movement | What it means for contact wear |
|---|---|---|
| Potentiometer | Measures resistance through a carbon surface and moving wiper. | The rubbing contact can wear and affect the signal. |
| Hall effect | Reads changes in a magnetic field. | Contactless sensing avoids potentiometer contact wear. |
| TMR | Reads changes in magnetic resistance. | Contactless sensing avoids potentiometer contact wear. |
Hall-effect and TMR sticks both use contactless magnetic sensing, but they do not sense movement in the same way. Neither label tells you by itself how well the whole controller is centered, calibrated, built, or repaired. SCUF cautions that “Hall Effect and TMR joysticks don’t inherently fix drift or mechanical centering issues” in its support article, “Understanding Drift and Jitter,” updated July 6, 2026. Texas Instruments’ Hall-effect joystick design application note, revised December 2023, likewise discusses how design choices such as magnet selection and mechanical implementation matter in a small joystick.
Does TMR prevent stick drift?
No sensor type guarantees drift prevention. TMR can reduce the risk of drift associated with wear on a potentiometer’s carbon track and wiper because it removes that rubbing contact. It cannot prevent every cause of unwanted input, including poor mechanical centering, incorrect calibration, dirt, or physical damage.

Be cautious with phrases such as “drift-proof,” “never drifts,” or “permanent fix.” GameSir’s technology page uses claims including “Infinite Lifespan” and “Near-Zero Drift Rate”; those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results or guarantees for every TMR-equipped controller. GameSir also lists “5+ Million Cycles” and “< 1mA” as specifications, but those figures should not be treated as independently verified lifespan or performance results.
What to try if your controller is already drifting
First identify the controller and follow its manufacturer’s guidance. Thrustmaster lists calibration, cleaning, and dead-zone adjustment as possible steps, depending on the cause. These may help with some problems, but they are not universal repairs.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Calibrate the stick: Use the calibration procedure for your specific controller or platform. Calibration may correct some position problems, but it will not repair worn or damaged hardware.
- Check for dirt or debris: If the manufacturer’s instructions allow it, clean around the stick to address possible debris. Avoid methods or products the manufacturer does not recommend.
- Adjust the dead zone: Increasing the dead zone can mask small unwanted input near center. The trade-off is reduced sensitivity to small intentional movements.
- Seek repair if the problem remains: A worn sensor, damaged stick, or weakened centering spring may need repair or replacement. Replacement modules are model-specific; confirm compatibility before buying one.
These conditional troubleshooting options are covered in Thrustmaster’s drift guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What sensor claims can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence cited here does not establish an independent comparative lifespan or drift rate for TMR versus Hall-effect sticks. A sensor label alone also does not establish a controller’s battery performance, calibration quality, repairability, platform compatibility, or warranty. To compare controllers, check those details for the specific model rather than assuming they follow from the sensor technology.
