Large mobile games can take tens of gigabytes, and the free space needed to install or update one may be greater than its initial store download. Check the publisher’s current requirement for your exact game and device, then leave additional room for updates. As one current example, HoYoverse lists 40 GB available and recommends 60 GB for Genshin Impact on both Android and iOS; those figures are not a rule for other games.
How much free space should you leave?
Use the game publisher’s current available-storage requirement for your platform as your starting point. For Genshin Impact, HoYoverse’s requirements, updated November 11, 2025, list 40 GB available and 60 GB recommended on Android and iOS. The publisher also warns that “Storage requirements may increase with future game updates.” The figures are for that game, not a general estimate for every large mobile title. Requirements can vary with platform, game version, downloaded languages or other resources, and whether an update is pending. The available-space figure is a planning requirement; it is not necessarily the same as the final amount shown as the game’s installed size. Check the publisher’s page again before a major update rather than assuming a fixed extra allowance.
Why can a game need more space than its download size?
A store download figure and the space used after installation measure different things. Google Play’s developer documentation bases size limits on compressed download size and treats install-time assets separately from asset packs delivered later or on demand. A game may therefore download additional resources after its initial install, and its on-device footprint can differ from the compressed package size shown in a store. When comparing games, compare like with like: the same platform, current version, and state of downloaded resources. Do not treat a store listing as if it were a measurement of a fully updated game on a device.
How to free up space without risking game data
Start with reversible cleanup: remove offline files you no longer need, review unused apps, and clear temporary cache where that option is available. Before deleting a game or any app data, check its publisher’s instructions for account sign-in and save recovery.

Android phones and tablets
- Review what is using space. Open Settings > Storage and inspect the largest categories. Menu names and available steps vary by manufacturer; Google notes that some help steps apply only to Android 14 or later.
- Remove files you recognize. Delete unneeded local downloads or media. If you plan to remove device copies of photos, first verify that the backed-up copies are available.
- Clear cache, not storage, when you mean temporary cleanup. In the app’s storage settings, choose Clear cache if you intend to remove temporary files. An app may run more slowly the next time it opens. Google distinguishes this from Clear storage: “Permanently deletes all app data. Try to delete the data within the app first.” Avoid clearing storage unless you understand what will be erased.
- Archive or uninstall apps you can restore. Where supported, Android’s archive option removes an infrequently used app while preserving personal data. Uninstall only apps you are comfortable downloading again.
- Move personal files before deleting local copies. Google describes copying files and folders to a computer over USB, then removing them from the device if you need the space. Google’s Android storage guide covers these options.
iPhone and iPad
- Find the largest apps. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or Settings > General > iPad Storage. The list shows apps by size and last-used time.
- Check a game’s save and account rules before removing it. Activision says Call of Duty: Mobile progress and other game data can be reinstated after reinstalling if the player signs in with the same account. That assurance applies to that game; do not assume another title works the same way. Confirm your credentials and the game publisher’s instructions first.
- Verify personal-file backups. Confirm photos and other files are backed up or transferred before deleting local copies. Activision also points users to managing iCloud backup when troubleshooting storage. See Activision’s Call of Duty: Mobile support information.
A safe order before installing or updating
- Check the publisher’s storage requirement for the current game and platform.
- Inspect device storage and identify the largest categories you can safely reduce.
- Remove known offline downloads or files that are backed up elsewhere.
- Clear temporary cache where available; do not confuse it with clearing an app’s full storage.
- If you are considering deleting the game, verify your sign-in details and the publisher’s save or reinstall instructions.
- Install or update over a reliable connection, then check the device’s available space again.
Will a flash drive or SD card make room for a mobile game?
An external drive may help you copy personal files off a device, but it does not expand the space available for installing or running a game. Compatibility varies by phone, tablet, drive, and connection. Back up or transfer files, confirm the transferred copies open, and only then remove device copies. Do not assume an SD card or USB drive can move a particular game.
