Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are announced platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled to launch November 19, 2026. If you’re buying a console specifically for GTA 6 and care most about the game’s officially described immersive features, PS5 has the clearer documented case. If you already own an announced console, the available official information does not justify buying the other one just for GTA 6.
Is GTA 6 coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Yes. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Xbox’s game listing also confirms the Xbox platform and date. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. Rockstar’s announcement and Xbox’s listing do not present it as exclusive to either console.
What is the actual PS5-versus-Xbox difference?
The clearest GTA 6-specific distinction in the official material is that Sony describes features the game will use on PS5. The checked sources do not provide a comparable Xbox feature list or a direct performance test between the consoles.
PS5’s documented features
Sony says the game will use DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. It also labels the game PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony’s Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing, wrote that GTA 6 “will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features.” That is Sony’s official platform positioning, not an independent comparison or benchmark. What is not established
The reviewed official pages do not establish which console will deliver higher resolution, a higher frame rate, better image quality, or faster loading in GTA 6. They also do not provide a GTA 6 graphics-mode list or a head-to-head Xbox-versus-PS5 benchmark. Don’t treat “plays best on PS5” as proof of a measured performance advantage.
Which console should you choose?
Choose PS5 if you are starting fresh and value the advertised features
If you do not already own either console and GTA 6’s controller and audio features matter to you, PS5 is the better-supported choice on the evidence available: Sony has specifically detailed how the game will use them. That recommendation is about documented feature support, not a proven advantage in frame rate or graphics.

Stay with the console you already own
If you own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, the announcement of GTA 6 for both platforms gives you a straightforward path: play it on the system you have. A second console is difficult to justify for this game alone without evidence of a specific performance difference that matters to you.
Let your friends, library, and local cost decide the close call
When you are choosing between platforms, consider where your friends play, which console has the games and account ecosystem you already use, and the total local price of the console and game. These are personal-fit questions; the official sources do not establish that one platform is universally cheaper or a better value.

Does PS5 Pro change the decision?
The PlayStation Store labels GTA 6 “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” but the checked listing does not specify what that means in terms of resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or improvements over a standard PS5. Treat the label as confirmation of Pro-enhanced status—not as a quantified performance promise. The sources do not provide a basis to choose PS5 Pro over Xbox Series X|S on GTA 6 performance alone.

The boxed physical version is a download code, not a disc
Rockstar Support says the physical edition comes with a digital download code inside the box and “A disc will not be included in the box.” That matters if you collect discs, expect to resell the game, or want to install from physical media. Rockstar says physical availability and preload are planned for November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. Check the retailer’s regional compatibility details: Rockstar says code-region rules depend on the platform and account region, and its support page describes Xbox codes as not region-locked. Standard and Ultimate are editions, not platform choices
Rockstar lists Standard and Ultimate editions, as well as a separately purchasable Ultimate upgrade for Standard owners. The available information does not say Ultimate is required to play the game; choose an edition based on its listed contents rather than assuming it changes which console is right for you. Check Rockstar Support for the current edition details.
Prices vary by store and region
When checked on October 3, 2026, the US PlayStation Store listed Standard at US$79.99 and Ultimate at US$99.99. Those are US digital-store listings, not global prices or evidence of Xbox price parity. Check both platform stores and local retailers for current prices before purchasing. PlayStation’s US game listing shows the observed prices.
