Start with low-risk checks: compare your PC with the specific game’s requirements, restart, close nonessential apps and overlays, update Windows and your graphics driver, then verify the game files if it is installed through Steam. After that, follow the branch for your symptom—stutter, a game crash, slow loading, or a whole-PC failure. These checks cannot diagnose every horror game; its current patch notes and publisher support instructions take precedence.
First, identify what is going wrong
“Stuttering” can mean uneven frame pacing even when the average frame rate seems adequate, or it can mean consistently low frame rates. A crash to desktop is different from a computer that freezes, shows a blue screen, or restarts. For loading, distinguish a slow download or installation from a long game launch or level load.
Note when the issue occurs and whether it began after a game patch, Windows or driver update, settings change, or hardware change. Record the game version and launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU and its video memory (VRAM), installed RAM, storage type, graphics-driver version, and the error text or crash report if one appears. Check the game’s requirements before changing settings
Compare your PC with the minimum and recommended requirements for the exact game and version. Generic “horror game” requirements are not useful: demanding graphics, engine changes, and supported hardware vary by title. Capcom warns that a PC below minimum specifications may have poor performance or fail to run. If your PC meets minimum but falls short of recommended specifications, try reducing demanding graphics settings before considering an upgrade. Restart the PC before testing so you can tell whether a change made a difference.

For a laptop, check the game or GPU maker’s documented instructions for selecting the intended high-performance GPU; do not assume the game is using the chip you expect.
Try reversible software checks
- Restart the PC. This clears temporary state and gives you a consistent baseline for testing.
- Install available Windows updates and current graphics drivers from the relevant official vendor, following the game publisher’s or GPU maker’s instructions. Restart after installing a driver.
- Close nonessential apps, recorders, and overlays while testing. These can use system resources or affect stability; Steam’s software performance guidance covers background applications and other software factors. Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance has more detail.
- Change one setting at a time. For low frame rates or stutter, test a lower resolution or reduce demanding graphics options. Avoid changing several settings together, which makes results harder to interpret.
Do not treat administrator mode, antivirus exclusions, or disabling security protection as universal fixes. Some publisher instructions include narrowly targeted security exceptions, but use them only when the game’s own support guidance calls for them, and never leave protection disabled permanently. Likewise, driver-removal utilities, BIOS changes, and deleting files should not be early troubleshooting steps.

Verify game files if the game is installed through Steam
- Restart the PC, then open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the check finish; it may take several minutes. If Steam reacquires missing or corrupted files, test the game again.
Steam notes that some files can fail verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced; a small number of such failures may be safe to ignore. How do I fix game stuttering or frame drops?
- Reduce graphics demands. Lower resolution or demanding settings, then test the same scene. Capcom’s guidance identifies graphics settings and heat as factors that can affect smooth play.
- Close background apps and overlays. Recorders and performance overlays can consume resources or compromise stability; Steam discusses these software-related performance factors in its performance troubleshooting guide.
- Check temperatures and ventilation. Make sure the PC’s vents are unobstructed. If performance deteriorates as the system heats up, stop repeated testing and investigate cooling rather than assuming the game alone is at fault.
- Consider memory and storage only when relevant. Limited free memory and slow drive reads can contribute to delays or hitches, according to Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance. Do not assume clearing a shader cache will fix stutter. Capcom mentions damaged cache files as a possible cause of some graphical problems and suggests deleting game cache files conditionally; follow the instructions for your particular title rather than deleting files indiscriminately.

Why does my PC game keep crashing?
If the game crashes to desktop on launch or during play, check requirements, install updates, close background software, and verify the installation where the launcher supports it. Note the exact error and whether the crash happens at the same point each time. If it began immediately after a game patch or driver update, include that timing when seeking help; do not assume a general driver reinstall will fix it. Steam notes that launch failures can involve varied software and hardware configurations, and recommends contacting the game developer if common checks do not resolve them. Why are game loading times so long?
First establish whether the delay is during downloading or installing, at game launch, or while loading a level. For slow game or level loads, check available memory and the drive where the game is installed. Steam identifies slow drive reads and limited free memory as possible hardware-related contributors in its hardware troubleshooting guidance. If the game is on a slow drive, moving it to or installing it on a compatible SSD may help with storage-related read delays, but it will not fix unrelated crashes or a game-engine problem. Check your PC’s supported interface and physical drive size before buying one; NVMe is not a universal requirement. Before moving or reinstalling a game, check that your saves are backed up and understand the launcher’s cloud-save behavior.

A full system failure is not merely a game crash. Steam Support says system crashes can indicate a computer problem, and overheating is especially plausible when performance slows first. Stop repeatedly stressing the PC; if freezes, blue screens, or unexpected restarts persist, seek PC support and provide the system’s error information. What to send the game’s support team
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, contact the game’s developer or publisher through its support page. Include concise, reproducible details rather than only saying that the game is broken:
- Game name and version, launcher, Windows version, and CPU, GPU/VRAM, RAM, and storage details.
- Graphics-driver version, graphics settings, and any recent game, Windows, driver, or hardware change.
- The precise symptom, exact error text, where and when it occurs, and steps that reproduce it.
- Whether restarting or any specific check changed the behavior.
- DxDiag or equivalent system details and crash-report files, if available and requested by the publisher.
