Check support for the specific game, confirm the controller works with your phone, then pair it and enable controller input in the game if needed.
Does the mobile game support a controller?
Start with the game, not the phone. The game must recognize controller input; a phone showing that a controller is connected does not establish that the game supports it. Check the game’s current support information or its in-game control settings. Epic, for example, says Fortnite supports external controllers on mobile while warning that compatibility can vary by device. Epic’s Fortnite device guidance is specific to Fortnite, not a universal list for mobile games.
Some games may require you to finish a tutorial or switch from touch controls in settings before controller input works. Backbone’s game compatibility guidance describes these cases. Check the instructions for your game rather than assuming a controller will work immediately.
Will the controller work with your phone?
Compatibility has two separate parts: the controller must connect to the phone, and the game must support that controller input. Check the phone’s operating system and connector against the controller maker’s compatibility information. If the controller clamps onto the phone, also confirm the phone’s dimensions and whether its case fits. A wired setup may require a separately sold adapter, depending on the phone and controller.

Features can differ even when a controller connects. Apple notes that supported buttons and other controller features vary by controller and app. Epic likewise cautions that not every external device is compatible with every supported setup. Avoid treating any single controller as a guarantee of support across all mobile action games.
How to connect and set up a controller
- Check the game. Look up controller support for the exact game or check its control settings. Do this before buying hardware.
- Check the phone and controller combination. Confirm operating-system and connector compatibility, phone fit if the controller mounts on the device, and whether a wired connection needs an adapter.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller on iPhone. Put the controller into discovery mode using its instructions. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select the controller. Apple also documents connecting a compatible wired controller; follow the controller maker’s directions and check whether an adapter is needed. See Apple’s iPhone controller connection instructions.
- Open the game and enable input if necessary. Complete any required tutorial and select controller controls in the game’s settings if it offers that option.
- Troubleshoot if the game does not respond. First verify that the game supports controllers and that you completed any setup steps. Apple advises updating the iPhone and controller software, forgetting the controller and pairing it again, and reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices. Its wireless controller troubleshooting steps cover iPhone pairing problems.
For Android, check the instructions from the phone and controller makers and the game’s own support information. Compatibility depends on the specific combination; the guidance here does not establish one universal Android setup path.

What if the game only has touchscreen controls?
Touch mapping is a workaround offered by some products, not the same thing as native controller support. Backbone says its TouchSync feature maps controller inputs to screen touch points, but limits it to Android, current Backbone software, and an active Backbone+ subscription. Those are Backbone’s stated requirements; the feature should not be assumed to work with every game or to behave like a game’s built-in controller support. See Backbone’s TouchSync details.
Does remote play count as playing a mobile game natively?
No. Remote play and cloud gaming stream a game to your phone; they are separate from a mobile game installed and running on the phone. They can have their own account, internet, service, and console requirements. Backbone describes remote and cloud play as distinct ways to play in its game information.

For example, Sony’s May 23, 2023 PlayStation Blog announcement said PS Remote Play on a mobile device required a PS4 or PS5, the PS Remote Play app, a PlayStation Network account, and broadband internet. It listed 5 Mbps as the minimum and recommended at least 15 Mbps. Those figures are from that dated announcement, not a guarantee of current service requirements; check PlayStation’s current guidance before relying on them. - Game support: Confirm that the games you actually play accept controller input.
- Phone compatibility: Check operating system, connector, and the controller maker’s supported devices.
- Fit: For a phone-mounted controller, verify dimensions and case clearance.
- Connection: Compare a mounted connection with Bluetooth, and account for any adapter a wired setup may need.
- Controls and features: Check which buttons and features your particular game and controller support.
If you are shopping for a mobile game controller for iPhone or Android, verify your phone’s connector and fit as well as support in your target games. A product category or phone connection alone cannot guarantee that a particular game will work.
