The clearest evidence is for Resident Evil 2 (2019): its producer said it was designed to entertain people who knew the original and those who did not, and Capcom USA staff recommended it as a starting point for newcomers. That answer is strongest for Resident Evil 2, rather than a guarantee about every remake or every continuity question in the series.
Can you understand Resident Evil 2 (2019) without playing the original?
Yes. In a 2018 interview, Resident Evil 2 producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the remake’s overall plot remained the same, while some events were rearranged or adjusted to make the story easier to understand as a whole. He also said he expected it to entertain both people who had played the original and people who had not. Read Kanda’s interview.
Capcom USA staff made the recommendation explicit for new players: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” See Capcom USA’s first-player guidance. That is Capcom staff’s suggested entry point, not a universal ranking of the games.
What changes if you play the original first?
The 2019 remake is an adaptation, not a scene-for-scene reproduction. Kanda described changes to the order and presentation of events. The original game’s Zapping System—where actions in one character’s campaign could affect parts of the other character’s—was replaced by Leon and Claire campaigns intended to present a comprehensive story. So playing the original first is useful if you specifically want to compare how the two versions tell the story or experience the original’s campaign structure. It is optional context, not homework required to follow the remake.
Where should a newcomer start?
If you want to play a remake without prior series knowledge, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the clearest supported starting choice: Capcom USA staff recommended it directly to new players. The choice between it and the original depends on what you want from the experience, rather than on a prerequisite for understanding the remake.

- Choose the remake if you want to experience its version of the story without first learning the original.
- Choose the original first if comparing campaign structure, narrative changes, or the earlier version itself is part of what interests you.
Does that answer apply to every Resident Evil remake?
Not automatically. The direct design-intent evidence here concerns Resident Evil 2 (2019), so it should not be stretched into a complete rule for every remake, sequel, or continuity question. A 2026 media report quotes producer Yoshiyaki Hirabayashi saying the Code: Veronica remake can be enjoyed standalone without playing the original, but that is secondary reporting about a different remake, not an official transcript or proof of a franchise-wide rule. If your question is whether a particular later entry, such as Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6, requires earlier games for its continuity, the evidence summarized here does not establish a complete play order. For the narrower question of beginning with Resident Evil 2 (2019), prior play is not required.
