Under the 2026/27 IFAB Laws, an abandoned match is replayed by default unless the competition rules or organisers decide otherwise. A team responsible for abandonment because it has fewer than seven players will in principle forfeit, subject to the applicable regulations.
Who decides whether a match can continue?
The referee has authority over the match and judges whether circumstances allow play to continue. IFAB’s Laws apply across countries and confederations, subject to modifications IFAB permits; the rules for a particular fixture also depend on the edition adopted by its competition and that competition’s regulations. See IFAB’s Notes on the Laws of the Game and edition index.
For a specific international match, first establish its date and competition, then check the relevant edition of the Laws and the competition regulations. The Laws set the general framework; competition rules or an organiser’s decision can determine what happens after abandonment.
What is the difference between stopping, suspending and abandoning?
- Stopping play pauses action for an incident. Play can restart when the situation is dealt with, using the restart required by the circumstances and the Laws.
- Suspending a match pauses the match while a problem is assessed or addressed.
- Abandoning a match ends it before its ordinary completion.
These are not interchangeable outcomes. IFAB’s Laws do not set a universal number of minutes after which a suspension automatically becomes an abandonment; the referee judges whether continuation is possible, while competition rules govern the consequences.

What circumstances can lead to a suspension or abandonment?
Under IFAB Law 5, the referee may stop, suspend or abandon a match when outside interference or conditions around the game prevent it from continuing. Examples include inadequate floodlights, an unsafe surrounding environment, or field or weather conditions that make play impossible.
An object thrown by a spectator illustrates why context matters: if it hits a match official, player or team official, the referee may allow play to continue or may stop, suspend or abandon, depending on the severity. If play is stopped over a spectator’s object and the match is not suspended or abandoned for safety reasons, the restart is a dropped ball.

None of these examples means abandonment is automatic. An injury, thrown object, weather event or other interruption calls for a decision in context; a routine stoppage is not itself a decision to end the match.
What happens if a team has fewer than seven players?
IFAB Law 3 says the referee is not obliged to stop play while the ball is in play just because a team has fewer than seven players. But once the ball goes out, the match must not resume if either team has fewer than seven. The minimum-player provisions are in Law 3 for 2025/26; confirm which edition applies to a particular fixture.

Under the current Law 7 provision, a team responsible for abandonment because it has fewer than seven players will, in principle, forfeit. That consequence remains subject to the relevant competition regulations.

The 2026/27 default is: “An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules or organisers determine otherwise.” The current Law 7 therefore does not guarantee that every abandoned match will be replayed, awarded as a forfeit, or resumed from the point where play stopped. The applicable regulations and any organiser decision determine the outcome for a particular friendly, qualifier or tournament.

IFAB’s latest law changes identify approval of this amendment on 28 April 2026. Older summaries that say simply that an abandoned match is replayed omit the competition-rule qualification in the current provision.

How to check the rules for a particular fixture
- Identify the match date and competition. These establish which Laws edition and competition regulations to consult.
- Check the adopted Laws edition. IFAB’s documents index lists editions including 2026/27 and 2025/26.
- Confirm what happened. Distinguish a stoppage or suspension from abandonment, and note whether a team fell below seven players.
- Read the competition regulations. Look for provisions on abandonment, resumption, replay and forfeiture; they, or an organiser decision, may set a different outcome from the IFAB default.
