If a PS5 Pro game looks blurry, shimmers, flickers, or loses detail, first check whether the problem is limited to that game and mode. Then compare the game with Enhance PSSR Image Quality on and off. If the picture also drops out, shows the wrong resolution, or has trouble at 4K/120 Hz, investigate the TV and HDMI connection instead: a signal-chain issue is different from an artifact inside a game’s upscaling.
First identify where the image problem occurs
Before changing settings, note the affected game, its graphics mode, and whether the problem appears during motion, in a still scene, or both. Check whether it occurs in one title or also in other games and the PS5 interface. This comparison helps separate a title-specific rendering issue from a broader display-output problem; it is a diagnostic approach, not a Sony-prescribed test.
- One game or mode: suspect that game’s rendering path or implementation first.
- Several games or the console interface: check the output signal, display settings, and HDMI connection.
- Only during motion: record that detail when comparing settings or contacting support; motion-related artifacts can be harder to spot in a still image.
Check whether the game is using PSSR
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based image reconstruction and upscaling technology for PS5 Pro games. The graphics mode, game update, and title-specific implementation can affect whether PSSR is active. Install available PS5 system software and game updates, then check the game’s mode information or settings rather than assuming every mode uses PSSR.
Sony announced an upgraded PSSR on February 27, 2026, and said broader system-software support would roll out from March 16, 2026. The upgrade applies to supported implementations, not every game or rendering mode. Sony says results vary by title, so it should not be treated as a universal fix for blur, flicker, or shimmering. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement describes improved image stability and fine-detail clarity across supported titles.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare Enhance PSSR Image Quality on and off
- On the PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality and note its current state.
- In the affected game, keep the same scene and graphics mode, change only this option, and compare the image. Check both a still view and motion if that is when the issue appears.
- If the picture develops unexpected visual effects with the option enabled, turn it off and compare again. Restore your preferred setting if the comparison does not help.
Sony says this option is on by default and available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. Sony also explicitly says users can turn it off if unexpected visual effects occur. The result can differ by game: statements from developers cited in Sony’s announcement describe improvements in particular implementations, not independent tests or a guarantee for every title.
Check the TV and HDMI path for signal problems
If the symptom includes a blank screen, intermittent signal, incorrect resolution, or trouble specifically at 4K/120 Hz, check compatibility before treating it as a PSSR artifact. Sony notes that 4K/120 Hz support varies among displays and that issues can occur.

- Confirm that the TV supports the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use, and install available TV firmware updates.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV’s appropriate HDMI port while troubleshooting, rather than routing it through another device.
- Check that the console’s resolution and video transfer-rate settings are appropriate for the display.
- Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 as Sony’s suggested default. If a different cable is needed for 4K/120 Hz, Sony recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that mode. A cable is a compatibility check, not an image-quality upgrade for game-specific reconstruction artifacts.
Follow Sony’s 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting guidance for the applicable display, port, cable, and video-output checks.
Keep the PS4 image-enhancement setting separate
PS5 Pro has a separate option called Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. It is not the PSSR setting. For PS4 game image enhancement, Sony says to enable that option, confirm that the display supports 2160p/60 Hz or 1440p/60 Hz, and turn the option off if unexpected gameplay behavior occurs. Image-quality availability can depend on the home entertainment setup. See Sony’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting guide for this separate setting.

Escalate based on the symptom
If flickering persists, Sony’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting page links to a symptom-specific Image Flickering support path. For persistent resolution problems, Sony’s resolution guide directs users to PlayStation Repairs for diagnostics and possible repair.
If the issue appears only in one game or mode while other games and the console interface display normally, give the game’s publisher the title, mode, and settings you observed. Visible PSSR flicker alone does not establish that the console has a hardware fault.
