What you need before setting up GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with the latest system update installed.
- A Nintendo Account and a phone number that can receive a verification text.
- A persistent internet connection and a completed GameChat connection test.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s open-access period ended March 31, 2026; availability and requirements can vary by country. Check Nintendo’s GameChat information and Nintendo Switch Online FAQ for current regional details.
If the user is under 16, a parent or guardian must set up the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and approve GameChat. See Nintendo’s parental-controls guidance.
Set up GameChat for the first time
- Press the C Button on the Switch 2 to open GameChat, then follow the console’s setup prompts.
- Review the information and GameChat terms, and accept them to continue.
- When prompted, enter the verification code sent by text to the phone number registered to the account.
- Select the friends you want to approve for GameChat. They must approve you on their consoles as well.
- Complete the remaining prompts, including the network connection test.

Approve friends and invite them to a room
GameChat invitations are limited to friends, and approval is mutual: selecting someone on your console does not approve you on theirs. Both people need to be friends, complete their own GameChat setup, and approve each other. Nintendo explains the approval process in its approved-friends guide.

- Press the C Button to open GameChat and start a room.
- Choose the approved friends you want to invite.
- Your friend can respond to the on-screen invitation by pressing the C Button or the HOME button.
- To invite additional friends after entering a room, use GameChat settings. A room can include up to 12 people.
Players in the same room do not have to be playing the same game—or actively playing at all.
If a friend’s invitation does not arrive
- Confirm that you have both completed GameChat setup and added each other as friends.
- Check that each of you has approved the other for GameChat.
- Verify that both consoles have internet access, current system software, and the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Allow for network delays. Nintendo notes that network conditions and physical distance can affect delivery.

Voice, video, and room limits
The Switch 2’s built-in microphone handles voice chat, so no separate microphone is needed for basic use. Video chat is optional and requires a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s dedicated option is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera. Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility; check whether the console recognizes a camera with the Test USB Camera feature in system settings.

GameChat settings for children and privacy
For users under 16, a parent or guardian uses the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app to approve GameChat and choose which friends the child can chat with. Nintendo says the parent or guardian’s account phone number is used for the child’s verification messages. The service also offers reporting and blocking tools.
Nintendo says GameChat content, including voice and video, is temporarily recorded and stored on the consoles involved. If someone submits a report, the last three minutes may be made available with it. See Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ and parental-controls guidance for details.
