As of October 3, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2. You also need a Nintendo Account and a persistent internet connection. A camera is optional: the console’s built-in microphone supports voice chat, while video chat requires a compatible USB camera. Users under 16 and supervised users need parental controls configured in Nintendo’s app and may chat only with parent-approved friends.
Does GameChat require Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and a persistent internet connection for GameChat. Nintendo’s temporary Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026, and has ended; older launch-period advice that membership was unnecessary no longer applies. Nintendo Switch Online is a paid service, but the membership price depends on country, tier, and billing term. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ for current terms.
GameChat is a Nintendo Switch 2 feature, and Nintendo says it is not available in every country. Confirm local availability and membership terms on Nintendo’s regional support pages.
Do I need a camera or microphone?
No extra microphone or camera is needed for voice chat. Nintendo says Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so you can start chatting without buying audio equipment. Video chat, by contrast, requires a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s GameChat feature overview identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as an optional accessory sold separately.

Choosing a camera
| Option | What Nintendo establishes | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Camera | A dedicated USB-C camera designed for Switch 2. | Nintendo says it works in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes when plugged into the USB-C port on top of the console. |
| Third-party USB camera | Some other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility. | Test the specific camera in the console’s system settings before relying on it. Standard USB cameras may connect through the dock, according to Nintendo Support. |
| Voice-only | Uses the console’s built-in microphone. | No camera or separate microphone is required. |
To check an unverified camera, open the Switch 2 system settings and use Test USB Camera. Passing the check is more reliable than assuming any webcam will work; Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ describes the equipment requirements.
Can a child use GameChat?
Yes, if the required parental controls are configured. Nintendo requires users under 16 and supervised users to have GameChat controls set up in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app before using the feature. The parent or guardian needs to create or use the child’s Nintendo Account within a family group, link the Switch 2 to the app, and configure GameChat controls. Nintendo’s parent and guardian setup guide also explains that the parent’s registered phone number is used for verification messages when a younger player wants to use GameChat.

Approve friends and manage video
- Approve individual friends: A parent or guardian can approve or withdraw approval for contacts. A child or supervised user cannot use GameChat with an unapproved friend. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite others or accept room invitations.
- Choose whether video is allowed: Parents can require approval each session or disallow camera use. With session-by-session approval, a new request is needed for each new room.
- Limit the camera view: Available choices described by Nintendo include face only, person only, or full video.
- Review activity: Parents can view Play Activity and Monthly Summary information, including who the child chatted with and for how long.
The camera permission setting does not restrict screen sharing, according to Nintendo’s Parental Controls overview and FAQ. These settings help parents manage interactions, but they are not a guarantee of safety. Nintendo says players can report offensive or harassing behavior; confirmed cases may result in action, including suspension of a Nintendo Account.

Nintendo describes rooms of up to 12 friends. Within a room, up to four players can use video chat and/or share their game screen in real time. Participants can play the same game, different games, or no game at all. GameChat does not itself provide game copies or multiplayer access: a particular game may have separate requirements, and Nintendo notes that additional games, systems, or accessories may be needed for multiplayer mode.
