Server-side and client-side anti-cheat address different parts of the problem. A server can validate game actions and analyze match behavior; software on a player’s device can inspect local files, processes, memory, or system state. Neither approach sees everything, so many games combine them rather than choosing one.
What server-side and client-side anti-cheat mean
Server-side: validate the game and analyze its outcomes
In a server-authoritative game, the server—not the player’s device—decides consequential game state. It can reject an action that violates the rules or correct a client whose local prediction differs from the server’s simulation. Riot describes this model in its explanation of VALORANT’s netcode: the client may predict movement, but the server remains authoritative.
“Server-side anti-cheat” can also mean behavioral analysis of match data. That is distinct from validating each action: behavioral systems look for suspicious patterns or performance across play, while authoritative simulation prevents or rejects invalid state changes. Riot describes behavioral detection as using in-game performance data; it may flag suspicious play without identifying a particular cheat. Riot’s anti-cheat overview
Client-side: inspect the player’s device
Client-side anti-cheat runs on or checks the player’s machine. Depending on its design and permissions, it may inspect game files, processes, memory, or operating-system state to find or impede local tampering—things a server generally cannot examine directly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These systems differ by product. Riot describes Vanguard as a user-mode client, a kernel-mode driver, and a platform: in Riot’s account, the client handles detections while a driver validates memory and system state and runs at startup. That is Riot’s description of its own system, not a definition of every anti-cheat product. Riot’s explanation of Vanguard
How the approaches compare
| Question | Server-side approach | Client-side approach |
|---|---|---|
| What can it observe? | Inputs, server simulation, game outcomes, and patterns visible in server data. Behavioral analysis can identify suspicious performance without necessarily naming the cheat. Riot’s anti-cheat overview | Local game and system state, subject to the product’s permissions and design. Riot says Vanguard’s driver validates memory and system state. Riot’s explanation of Vanguard |
| What can it enforce? | Reject actions that violate authoritative rules, correct divergent game state, or flag behavior for review or action. Riot’s netcode explanation and anti-cheat overview | Detect or impede unauthorized software and endpoint tampering. The particular checks and response depend on the product. Riot’s Vanguard description and Activision’s RICOCHET overview |
| What is the trust boundary? | Treat the client’s messages as requests or predictions, then validate consequential state on the server. Riot’s netcode explanation | The detector operates on a machine controlled by the player. Developers may use integrity checks or higher-privilege components; Riot says a cheat with greater privileges can compromise a user-mode client. Riot’s Vanguard description |
| What are the main trade-offs? | Server round trips can affect responsiveness, and behavioral signals can be ambiguous. Games use prediction and correction to balance authority with responsiveness. Roblox’s Server Authority explanation | Local inspection can reveal conditions invisible to the server, but endpoint defenses may be bypassed and can raise privacy, security, and compatibility concerns. The impact depends on the product; vendor descriptions do not establish comparative effectiveness. Riot’s Vanguard explanation and Riot’s security and privacy discussion |
Does server-side anti-cheat reduce lag?
Not by itself. If a client had to wait for the server before displaying every action, input could feel delayed. Games commonly let the client predict movement or other immediate responses, then reconcile the prediction with the server’s authoritative state. Riot describes prediction and server correction in VALORANT; Roblox describes client prediction and rollback in its Server Authority design. The client can therefore feel responsive without becoming the final authority. Riot; Roblox

Why do some games use kernel-level anti-cheat?
A kernel driver runs with more system privilege than ordinary user-mode software. That can help a product check for threats that operate at higher privilege than the game or its user-mode anti-cheat, but it also makes security, privacy, and compatibility important questions. Riot acknowledges kernel-mode concerns and explains Vanguard’s role and data practices in its own terms. Those vendor statements should be understood as claims about Vanguard, not independent proof that every driver is safe or that all anti-cheat software uses the same access. Riot’s Vanguard explanation; Riot’s security and privacy discussion
Why anti-cheat systems combine layers
Server authority, endpoint checks, and behavioral analysis cover different threats. Authority limits what a client can make the game accept; local defenses can look for tampering on the device; behavioral analysis can identify suspicious play that becomes visible across match data. Riot distinguishes detection and deterrence from preventing cheats altogether, and Activision describes RICOCHET as a multilayer system with server-side tools, client and server detections, analytics, and a kernel-level PC driver. What the comparison does—and does not—tell you
These are architectural differences, not a head-to-head performance ranking. The cited vendor and platform descriptions explain how their systems are intended to work, but they do not establish comparative detection accuracy, false-positive rates, system overhead, or privacy impact across products. No single approach is a universal winner: the relevant question is which threat a layer addresses and what trade-offs it brings.
