First establish which legal entities and activities its accounts cover, then assess revenue quality, business-line margins, cash flow, debt and dependence on sponsors, publishers, leagues and competitive results. Compare several years on a consistent basis; there is no established universal financial-health threshold for esports teams.
1. Define which business the accounts describe
Start with the reporting perimeter: the legal entity, group and activities included in the financial statements. Accounts might cover one team, a multi-title organization, a parent company or a wider group that also runs talent management, events, publishing, media services or unrelated businesses. Do not treat parent-company revenue or profit as esports-team performance unless the filing reports that segment separately.
Read the financial statements alongside their notes and management’s discussion of financial condition. For each period, record the financial year-end, currency, accounting basis, consolidation scope and whether the figures are audited. Use at least three years where available: roster changes, one-off sponsorships, player transfers, championship results, acquisitions and accounting timing can distort a single year.
2. Map revenue—and test how dependable it is
Build a revenue bridge by business line where disclosures allow. An SEC-filed company describes esports-team revenue from league revenue sharing, prize money, athlete transfer and rental fees, sponsorship, and advertising. Other possible lines include media or content rights, merchandise, digital goods, events and adjacent services. A 2022 Deloitte survey found that surveyed teams averaged about 65% of revenue from core esports activities, including sponsorship sales at 37% and prize money at 15%; those are historical survey results, not audited company data, current market averages or targets for an individual organization. For each line, ask whether revenue is contracted, recurring and collected in cash, or instead depends on performance, viewership or a one-time event. Identify the largest sponsors and publishers, renewal dates, termination rights, payment schedules and delivery obligations. A sponsorship’s face value can bundle title sponsorship, exclusivity, social and media rights, activations, hospitality, tickets and merchandising rights; assess what the organization must deliver as well as what it is promised. Revenue-sharing arrangements are specific to a game and league. Riot Games says League of Legends teams historically relied mostly on sponsorship, with media rights a much smaller source, and describes changes to digital-revenue sharing in its revised model. Do not assume that arrangement applies to other publishers or esports. (Riot Games, 2024)

3. Separate business-line margins from group results
When disclosures permit, distinguish roster compensation and related costs from event production, content, travel, facilities and central overhead. Compare gross profit and gross margin for each segment, then operating income and net income. The key question is whether recurring operations cover recurring costs without owner funding or exceptional prize results.
One SEC-filed company’s 2026 annual report illustrates why group and team figures must not be conflated. For fiscal 2024 and 2025, respectively, it reported:

The first two rows cover the consolidated group; the last two cover its esports-team operation. The higher group revenue in 2025 did not mean the team segment grew or that the consolidated business improved its gross margin. These figures describe one filer’s different business lines, not a sector benchmark. (SEC-filed annual report, 2026)
The same filer’s 2025 annual report showed esports-team gross profit of US$6.6 million in 2023 and US$2.5 million in 2024, with gross margin falling from 30.6% to 17.1%. Management attributed the decrease primarily to lower sponsorship and advertising revenue together with IP licensing revenue. Treat that as management’s explanation, and check the statements and notes for the underlying reported figures. (SEC-filed annual report, 2025)

4. Check whether the organization can pay its bills
Profit is not cash. Review cash and equivalents, operating cash flow, receivables and collection patterns, payables, current debt and committed financing. Estimate runway only when reliable cash and burn figures are available, and state the assumptions behind the estimate. If those figures are not disclosed, say that runway cannot be assessed rather than substituting a sector average.
Stress-test whether the organization could meet obligations if a major sponsor left, league payments were delayed, results or viewership declined, a publisher changed revenue sharing, or expected financing failed to arrive. Riot Games described a League of Legends esports period in which capital became harder to access, revenue growth did not keep up with cost growth and team cash reserves fell: “Over time, access to capital became limited, revenue growth didn’t catch up to cost growth, and team cash reserves dried up.” This is Riot’s explanation of its own League of Legends strategy, not an independently measured claim about every esports team. 5. Inspect liabilities and reliance on outside funding
Use the balance sheet and notes to identify borrowings, shareholder loans, lease obligations, deferred revenue, guarantees, related-party transactions and debt maturities. Compare obligations with cash and collectible receivables, paying attention to when payments fall due. Ask whether operations fund the organization or whether it repeatedly needs owners, refinancing, asset sales or new investment. Positive equity or accounting profit alone does not establish that it can meet near-term obligations.
6. Assess publisher, league and partner concentration
Map exposure by game title, publisher, league slot and commercial partner. Check participation fees or slot costs, revenue-sharing terms, qualification rules and exit provisions; consider how relegation or roster performance could affect revenue when relevant. League arrangements vary, so evidence about one publisher’s model is not a substitute for that organization’s own contracts and disclosures.
For a comparison between organizations, keep the reporting perimeter, period length and accounting basis consistent. Consider revenue concentration and recurrence, segment and operating margins, cash from operations, liquidity, debt burden and maturities, and the stability of publisher and sponsor contracts. A larger revenue figure by itself is not a reliable ranking of financial health.
What public information can—and cannot—show
Public disclosures vary in detail, and private organizations may not publish team-level accounts or the information needed to assess cash runway, contract concentration or segment profitability. Mark those items as unavailable rather than inferring them from parent-group results or historical survey averages. The available examples show how to analyze disclosed figures; they do not establish a universal debt, liquidity or profitability cutoff for esports organizations.
