Real-money trading (RMT) in World of Warcraft generally means exchanging money or other value outside the game for gold, items, or in-game services. Blizzard’s sanctioned route for exchanging real money and gold is the WoW Token: buy one through the in-game Shop, then sell it through the in-game Auction House. Buying gold or services from an outside seller is not the same system and may violate Blizzard’s rules.
What counts as real-money trading?
The key question is what is being exchanged and where the payment happens. If someone pays money or other outside value for WoW gold, items, or services, that is generally RMT. If players trade activities or items for in-game currency using WoW’s own tools, that is a different kind of transaction—though Blizzard has separate restrictions on organized service providers.
| Activity | How Blizzard’s published rules treat it |
|---|---|
| Buy a WoW Token from the in-game Shop and sell it through the in-game Auction House for gold | Blizzard’s explicitly sanctioned real-money-to-gold route, subject to version, region, and account eligibility. Blizzard Support: Using a WoW Token |
| Buy gold or items from an outside seller using cash or another outside payment | Distinct from the Token system; Blizzard’s EULA restricts commercial gathering and selling of in-game currency, items, or resources outside its platform or games. Blizzard End User License Agreement |
| Pay an outside provider with cash or other outside value for an in-game service | The EULA includes in-game services performed in exchange for payment among prohibited commercial uses. Blizzard End User License Agreement |
| Pay another player or guild in in-game currency for an activity | Not automatically RMT. Blizzard’s organized-services policy preserves individuals’ and guilds’ ability to transact in-game items or activities for in-game currency, while restricting organizations offering specified services. Is the WoW Token considered RMT?
It is a real-money-to-gold exchange, but it is not an unauthorized third-party sale. Blizzard designed the Token as an in-game mechanism: a player buys it from the Shop for real money and lists it on the Auction House for gold. A player who buys a Token for gold can redeem it for game time or, where available, Battle.net Balance. The redemption options and eligibility vary by game version and region; consult Blizzard’s current Token support page for the applicable rules.
Blizzard described the Token as a sanctioned way to exchange real money for gold in its March 2, 2015 announcement. That announcement also explained Blizzard’s rationale for the system and its efforts against third-party gold operations; those statements are Blizzard’s characterization, not independent quantified findings.

Is buying WoW gold from a third party against the rules?
Blizzard’s EULA broadly restricts commercial activity involving its games and platform. Its examples include gathering in-game currency, items, or resources for sale outside Blizzard’s platform or games; providing in-game services for payment; and commercial solicitation through or within Blizzard’s platform. Buying gold from an external seller is not the sanctioned Token exchange and falls into the category of outside-platform commercial activity addressed by those restrictions. Read the current EULA for the governing language.
Blizzard has said third-party gold services can involve compromised accounts, exploitative farming, scams, and disruptive advertising. Those are the company’s stated concerns; the cited announcement does not give a quantified measure of how often each occurs. Blizzard’s Token announcement

Can you pay someone to boost your character?
The payment method and the provider both matter. Paying with cash or other outside value for an in-game service falls within the EULA’s restriction on paid in-game services. Paying with gold does not automatically make every organized boosting offer permissible: Blizzard’s January 2022 policy prohibits organizations that offer boosting, matchmaking, escrow, or similar services, including when those services are offered for in-game gold.
The policy distinguishes those organizations from individuals and guilds using in-game tools to transact in-game items or activities for in-game currency. So it is inaccurate to say either that all boosting for gold is allowed or that all player-to-player transactions are prohibited. See Blizzard’s organized in-game services policy for its stated distinction.

Where WoW Tokens are available
Token availability is not universal across World of Warcraft modes or accounts. Blizzard Support currently lists Tokens as available in World of Warcraft and WoW Classic Progression, and unavailable in WoW Classic Era/Hardcore and Season of Discovery. Its page also notes account, regional, and other restrictions. In WoW Classic Progression, Token redemption is limited to game time rather than Battle.net Balance. These rules can change, so check Blizzard Support’s live eligibility and redemption details for your version and region before relying on them.

- What is the consideration? Cash or other outside value points to RMT; in-game currency is a different category, though it does not exempt an organized service provider from Blizzard’s restrictions.
- Is it through the Token system? Shop purchase followed by an Auction House sale is Blizzard’s sanctioned Token route; an outside seller is not part of that system.
- Who is offering the service? Blizzard’s organized-services policy distinguishes individuals and guilds from organizations selling specified services.
- Which game mode, region, and account apply? Token eligibility and redemption options vary, and policy details may change.
