Joey Porter Jr. gives Dallas another experienced outside-corner option, but the Cowboys had not announced his starting assignment as of Oct. 3, 2026. The team’s posted 2026 depth chart is labeled unofficial, still lists Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. at one cornerback spot and DaRon Bland and Caelen Carson at another, and does not include Porter. That snapshot is not proof that Porter is behind those players.
Why Dallas traded for Porter
On Sept. 30, 2026, Dallas acquired Porter from Pittsburgh, sending a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. The Cowboys’ trade report described him as a high-level outside starter and tied the move to early-season injury concerns: Durant had a hamstring designation, while Revel had knee and ankle issues. The Steelers’ transaction report confirmed the exchange.
The move adds a corner with a substantial starting record, not a publicly confirmed new CB1. Dallas has not stated which side Porter will play, whom he will replace, or whether he will start immediately. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in the Cowboys’ Sept. 30 report that the team had been having trade-market conversations; that is context for the acquisition, not a declared plan for Porter’s role.
How Porter compares with Dallas’s other cornerbacks
The Cowboys’ 2026 depth chart is marked “Unofficial.” In the snapshot reviewed Oct. 3, it lists Durant and Revel together at one cornerback position, Bland first and Carson second at another, with Ameer Speed next under the Durant/Revel line. Porter was on Dallas’s active roster but absent from the chart. Since the chart had not been updated to reflect the trade, it is a reference point for the existing group—not a reliable ranking of Porter against it.

What Porter’s 2025 numbers say—and what they don’t
The Cowboys’ Sept. 30 report attributes the following 2025 coverage figures to NextGenStats: 35 receptions allowed on 66 targets, 412 receiving yards allowed, no touchdowns allowed, one interception, a 66 passer rating when targeted, and -0.07 EPA per target. Those are metrics reported by the Cowboys with a NextGenStats attribution, not a new calculation here. They offer useful evidence of his recent coverage production, but they do not by themselves establish how he will perform in Dallas or supply a league ranking.
For traditional statistics, the Cowboys’ player profile reports that Porter appeared in 14 games in 2025, with 51 tackles, 34 solo tackles, 14 passes defended and one interception. Pittsburgh’s transaction report gives a different tackle total for that season: 52 tackles and 35 solo stops, while also reporting 14 passes defensed and one interception. The sources agree on the other listed figures, but their tackle totals differ; they should not be combined as if identical.

The Cowboys profile’s season-by-season table totals 157 career tackles through 2025, alongside 31 passes defended and three interceptions across 47 games. The Cowboys’ trade story uses 165 for his career tackle total in its prose, so the profile-table figure is the more precise one to use when referring to that displayed season-by-season sum.
When might Porter play?
Porter’s first-game timing was uncertain in the Dallas materials available Oct. 3. Pittsburgh reported that he was inactive for its first three games of 2026. He had also spent training camp on the Steelers’ Active/Physically Unable to Perform List before being activated Aug. 30. Dallas said he practiced fully that week, but explained that the speed of his arrival and a physical assessment would affect how quickly he could play.

Those details do not establish that he was either fully game-ready or unavailable for Dallas. They do mean that the trade alone is not evidence he would be in the lineup immediately. His status and the cornerback rotation should be checked against Dallas’s current weekly injury report and any updated team depth chart.

The safest read is that Porter raises Dallas’s experienced outside-corner options and gives the defense another player with a sustained starting history. His 41 starts through 2025 distinguish his experience from what can be inferred simply from the Cowboys’ chart, which is unofficial and had not yet incorporated him.

Any claim that Porter is already CB1, has displaced Bland, or is assigned to one side is projection rather than a team-confirmed depth-chart decision. Dallas’s available materials do not include a named coach’s statement specifying Porter’s assignment or technique. For now, the roster addition is clear; the exact lineup and timing are not.
