Before a major build, make a separate copy of the world and confirm it is saved somewhere you can access independently of the live save. The exact steps depend on whether you play Bedrock or Java Edition, your device, and whether the world is on a Realm. Don’t begin the risky change until you can see the copy.
Choose a backup method for your edition and platform
A backup is useful only if it creates a copy separate from the world you are about to edit. A local export gives you control over where that file is stored; a Realm download creates a local copy of a Realm world; and Windows Bedrock cloud backup depends on your installed version and available cloud storage. These options are not interchangeable across platforms.
| Method | What it gives you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock on Windows: Export World | An independent world file saved to a location you choose, according to Minecraft Help (Export a World in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition). | The documented path is for Bedrock on Windows; do not assume the same option exists on other platforms. The retrieved Help page is in Spanish and says its translation is AI-generated and may contain errors, so in-game labels may differ. |
| Realms: Download World or a listed backup | A local copy of the current Realm world, or a selected backup, available in your local worlds list and playable offline (Minecraft, Change Your Minecraft Realm World). | Minecraft says Realm backups are not retained indefinitely. Keep a downloaded copy if preserving this version matters. |
| Bedrock on Windows: cloud backup and sync | Cloud backup and sync support is described in Minecraft Bedrock Edition 26.40 release notes (Minecraft 26.40 Bedrock changelog). | This is version-specific and depends on cloud storage availability. The release notes describe an error when an upload fails because cloud storage is full. Cloud sync alone is not a verified independent archive. |
| Java Edition or Bedrock on another device | Use the instructions for the exact edition and platform listed in Minecraft’s Backup & Restore support index. | Steps differ by platform; the sources here do not establish one safe procedure for all devices. |
Export a Bedrock world on Windows
Minecraft Help documents an in-game export route for Bedrock on Windows. The cited page is Spanish and flags its translation as AI-generated, so check the current English labels in your installed game if they differ.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Find the world you want to protect and select its pencil icon.
- Under General Settings, open File Management.
- Select Export World. Choose any export settings you want, then select Export World again.
- Choose a save location and complete the export.
- Confirm the exported world file is present at that location before starting the build.
Store the exported file somewhere separate from the active world. For added protection if the computer is lost or fails, choose a location accessible independently of that device, such as a separate storage device or a cloud location you control. Minecraft Education’s export guidance names OneDrive, Teams, Google Drive, Google Classroom, and a USB flash drive as sharing destinations; that context does not establish compatibility for every Minecraft edition or platform.

Download a Realm world before replacing it
If the world is on a Realm and you want to preserve its progress before replacing the slot, download a copy first. Minecraft’s guidance says the downloaded world appears in your local worlds list and can be played offline.
- Open the Realm’s slot screen and edit the world.
- Select Download World to get the latest version, or open Backups and choose a listed backup.
- Wait for the download to finish, then check that the world appears in your local worlds list before replacing the Realm world.
Minecraft’s guidance states: “Do not rely on your Realm’s backups, because they are not retained indefinitely.” A downloaded copy gives you a version outside the Realm’s backup retention.

Check Windows Bedrock cloud backup carefully
Bedrock Edition 26.40 release notes describe cloud backup and sync for Windows worlds, allowing world data to be backed up and accessed across devices on that platform. Before relying on it, check that your installed version supports the feature and that your cloud storage is not full; Minecraft notes that a full cloud account can cause an upload error.
Cloud sync is useful for access across devices, but do not treat it as the only archive for an important build. Confirm that the upload has completed and, where possible, keep a separate exported copy.

For Java Edition and other Bedrock platforms
Minecraft publishes separate backup and restore support for Java Edition, Bedrock on Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, consoles, and Realms. Open the official Backup & Restore index and follow the instructions matching both your edition and device. A Windows Bedrock export procedure should not be applied to Java, mobile, or console worlds unless the instructions for that platform say to do so.

Choose a destination that is not simply the active world’s location. A separate device or a cloud destination you control can help preserve access if the gaming device is unavailable; an on-device copy is still useful as a separate version but may not help if that device fails. For exported files, Minecraft Education’s guidance lists USB flash drives and several cloud or classroom-sharing services as possible destinations, but it does not specify a particular product or guarantee support for every edition.
