For a first playthrough, make some early progress through Whiterun and toward the Greybeards, then mix in nearby side quests and a faction story that suits your character. Return to the main quest when its next story beat interests you. That’s a flexible route, not a required order: Skyrim supports both focused storytelling and open-ended exploration.
Is there a best order for Skyrim’s main and side quests?
No single order is established as best. Bethesda presents exploration, side quests, faction stories, skill development, and earning gold as ordinary parts of the adventure, while a low-spoiler route suggested by ExpertBeacon balances early main-story progress with nearby exploration. Treat that sequence as a practical starting point, not a rule.
The choice is mainly about what you want from the next stretch of play: a more continuous Dragonborn story, or the freedom to follow local leads and develop your character before returning to the central plot.
A flexible first-playthrough route
- Advance through Whiterun and toward the Greybeards. This gives the main story some early momentum without committing you to playing it straight through.
- Take nearby side quests when they appeal. Use local jobs to earn gold, build skills, and explore rather than treating every map marker as mandatory.
- Choose a faction story that fits your character. Follow its theme or role-play appeal; you do not have to complete every faction before moving on.
- Return to the main quest when you want its next major beat. There is no need to clear all available side content first.
This sequence is an editorial recommendation, not an official progression requirement. Bethesda’s Skyrim overview emphasizes that the adventure includes wandering off the beaten path as well as pursuing quests and developing skills.

Choose based on the experience you want
| Approach | Best fit if you want | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Main-story-first | A more continuous Dragonborn narrative and earlier progress toward the main quest’s major story beats. | Less time for spontaneous exploration and faction stories along the way; dragon encounters also become more relevant as the main quest advances. |
| Exploration-first | Room to follow nearby quests, earn gold, improve skills, and discover locations at your own pace. | The central narrative will pause while you pursue other interests. |
| Balanced, low-spoiler route | Early story context followed by local exploration and a faction storyline that interests you. | You will move between story threads rather than finishing one before starting another. |
Use your tolerance for interruptions, interest in a faction’s theme, and appetite for nearby side content to decide. Exploration works best when it feels like discovery, not a checklist.
How main-quest progress relates to dragons
In a 2011 interview published by Steam/PC Gamer, Skyrim game director Todd Howard said: “You have to do a little bit of the main quest – just the initial stuff – for the dragons to really start appearing, because it sits in with the story.” He also said that more main-quest progress brings more dragon encounters, while describing their frequency as difficult to quantify and somewhat random. This is a historical statement, not a precise schedule or a guarantee for every edition and playthrough. Read the interview.

Use the Journal as a difficulty cue
If a side quest or encounter feels too hard, check its color in the Journal. Bethesda Support’s guide says gray indicates an easy quest, yellow a difficult one, red a very difficult one, and green one suited to your level. These colors are a cue rather than a reason to abandon a quest you want to try; Bethesda also notes that the game has difficulty settings if an encounter proves too challenging.

Side content can offer more than a detour. Bethesda highlights treasure, gold, opportunities to build skills, standing stones, books, and trainers as things players can find while exploring. Its overview also points to several faction storylines as part of the game. Follow the ones whose themes appeal to your character instead of assuming that every faction must be completed.
