Choose an emulator and controller connection
Project64 is a Windows-focused option; its documentation lists Windows 10 and 11 requirements. Menu names and available input plugins can vary by installed version. The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide also provides setup instructions for BizHawk, but its game-specific constraints apply to that guide’s Archipelago setup, not automatically to every standard playthrough.
Connect the controller before configuring the emulator. A USB N64-style controller can connect directly if Windows detects it. An original wired N64 controller needs a compatible N64-to-USB adapter. Adapter and emulator compatibility varies, so check the adapter’s documentation for your specific model and software.
- Original N64 controller: Requires an adapter and may need adapter-specific software or plugin support.
- USB N64-style controller: Requires no N64-to-USB adapter, but Windows and the emulator still need to recognize and map it.
- Keyboard or modern gamepad: These are alternatives if the emulator detects and allows you to map them; the feel and analog precision may differ from an N64 controller.
For original hardware, Raphnet describes direct-access plugins for Project64 and Mupen64Plus. Check Raphnet’s adapter documentation for current details and compatibility with your adapter and emulator.

Confirm the PC detects the controller
Before changing emulator settings, check that Windows sees the USB controller or adapter. If it does not appear to the operating system, the emulator cannot map it reliably. Reconnect it, check its connection or adapter mode, and consult the device maker’s instructions before troubleshooting game controls.
Configure Project64 input
Open Project64’s controller or input configuration, select the detected device, and map the physical controls to their N64 counterparts. Labels and menu paths depend on the installed Project64 version and input plugin; Project64’s support documentation identifies Project64 input and N-Rage as options, depending on controller and needs.

- Start with the Project64 input plugin and select the controller device you want to use.
- Assign each N64 button to a physical button on your controller. Check the assignments individually rather than assuming a familiar layout.
- Assign the analog stick to analog axes where the plugin offers that option. Avoid mapping stick directions as digital inputs when analog axes are available.
- Save or apply the configuration, then check the controls in the game.
If Project64 does not detect the controller or its mappings do not work, try the N-Rage input plugin. The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide also recommends enabling N-Rage when Project64 controller setup causes problems; this is troubleshooting advice for that setup, not a universal requirement.
Configure BizHawk for Banjo-Tooie
The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide’s BizHawk instructions place directional input on the Analog tab. If the four digital bindings below are assigned, disable them because they can interfere with aiming:

Map the controller’s stick through the Analog tab, then assign the remaining buttons to your preferred N64 controls. These are instructions from the Archipelago guide; labels and settings may differ in other BizHawk versions or game setups.

After applying the settings, test the whole control scheme rather than only checking whether a button registers.

- Move in several directions and confirm the character responds to the stick as expected.
- Turn and aim with the analog stick. If aiming moves in the wrong direction or does not respond smoothly, revisit the axis assignment and any available dead-zone setting.
- Press each mapped button and confirm it triggers the intended action.
- Reopen the input settings to correct swapped axes, duplicate bindings, or buttons assigned to the wrong action.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect input
- The emulator does not see the controller: Confirm Windows detects the device, then select the correct device and input plugin in the emulator. In Project64, try N-Rage if the Project64 input plugin does not work with your controller.
- Buttons work, but movement or aiming does not: Recheck analog axis assignments. In BizHawk, use the Analog tab and disable conflicting
P1 Adirectional bindings if they are set. - An adapter works in one emulator but not another: Adapter support and plugin compatibility vary. Check the maker’s current documentation for your adapter and the emulator version you are using.
- Problems persist in Project64: Project64 support recommends updating Windows and drivers, using a current stable or nightly build, checking the game dump, and trying another input plugin.
