Before updating a modded Fallout 4 setup, back up the files and settings that would be difficult to rebuild: your saves, your PC mod manager’s profile data, and—on console—the Creations load order when the game offers an archive option. These are separate backups, and the right steps depend on your platform.
What should you back up?
A save-file copy preserves the copied save files; it does not capture your entire mod setup. On PC, also preserve your mod manager’s profile and configuration, and consider keeping downloaded mod archives. On console, use the game’s load-order archive feature when it is available. Bethesda recommends backing up Fallout 4 PC saves before installing a new mod.

Back up Fallout 4 saves on PC
Find the saves you actually use
Exit Fallout 4 before copying files so a save is not being written during the copy. Bethesda gives the default Windows location as C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves. Replace user.name with your Windows account name, and verify the actual location if you changed Windows folders or use manager profiles. See Bethesda’s Fallout 4 PC save backup instructions.
If a character or save seems to be missing, it may be listed separately from non-modded saves. Bethesda says modded saves move to a separate profile: switch profiles from the game’s load menu or choose the option to view all saves on the machine. Copy and protect the save files
- Open the verified Fallout 4
Savesfolder. - Copy the saves you want to protect into a clearly named backup folder. Bethesda suggests creating a
Save backupsfolder insideSaves. - For an additional copy away from the PC, copy that backup folder to separate storage, such as a USB drive. This is optional; Bethesda’s instructions do not prescribe a storage device.
- Leave the backup copies unchanged while testing the update or mod change.
To restore a copied save, Bethesda’s instruction is to move the files back to their home directory. A file backup makes those copied files available again, but does not establish that a save will remain compatible after a mod is updated, changed, or removed.
Preserve your PC mod manager profile and load order
A save backup will not, by itself, preserve enabled mods, installation order, plugin selection, or plugin load order. Record which manager and profile you use, then follow that manager’s current documented procedure to back up its profile and configuration. Manager storage and backup steps can vary, so do not assume one folder path works for every setup.

Mod Organizer 2 profiles
Mod Organizer 2’s project source describes a profile as including its enabled-mod list and installation order, enabled plugins and plugin load order, and a copy of the game INI; profile-specific saves can also be included when that option is used. Preserve the profile data through the current MO2 workflow rather than copying only the game’s save folder. The project’s profile descriptions in the source outline those components.
Keep archives and setup notes if you need them
- Back up downloaded mod archives if you want to avoid reacquiring them. Their location depends on your manager and settings; there is no single archive path established here for every manager.
- Make a dated note of the Fallout 4 version, manager and profile name, plus essential dependencies. A note helps identify the setup, but is not a substitute for backing up the profile and its files.
Archive a Fallout 4 console load order
For the console update covered by Bethesda’s dated notice, the in-game route was: Creations Menu → Load Order Menu → Load Order Archive → Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. Confirm the choice, then wait for the success message and data-file reload before leaving the menu.

Bethesda published its Fallout 4 Console Creations Storage Increase – Load Order Notice on November 21, 2025, for a specific update dated May 27, 2026. It said that update would reset console load orders and that console players with saves older than November 10, 2025, were expected to be affected. The notice also said a fresh save for an ongoing playthrough could preserve the load order. Those dates and effects describe that notice’s update, not a guarantee about later patches; check the current update notice and in-game menu before relying on the same option for another update.

Restoring copied files or retrieving an archived load order can help recover the items those backups contain. It does not prove that every save will work after changing or removing mods, nor that a manager profile alone includes every file needed to recreate a setup. Bethesda’s cited support pages do not publish a save-loss rate, mod-breakage rate, or backup-success percentage, so no reliable risk percentage can be given.
