PS Plus Monthly Games are subscription benefits you claim, while free-to-play games are games you can access without paying an upfront purchase price. They are separate categories: a free-to-play game usually does not require PS Plus for online multiplayer, but a claimed Monthly Game stays accessible only while your PS Plus membership is active.
How Monthly Games and free-to-play games differ
| Question | PS Plus Monthly Games | Free-to-play games |
|---|---|---|
| What the label means | A monthly game benefit included with PS Plus. You claim available titles through the service. | A game’s pricing and access model: the game is available without an upfront purchase price. |
| Is PS Plus needed to access it? | Yes. Access to claimed Monthly Games depends on an active PS Plus membership. | Usually not. PlayStation lists Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that generally do not require membership. |
| Does online multiplayer require PS Plus? | Monthly Games are a benefit of PS Plus, which includes online multiplayer across its three current tiers. | Usually not, but requirements vary by game. Check the individual PlayStation Store listing. |
| What happens if PS Plus ends? | Claimed games are accessible only while the membership remains active. | The free-to-play pricing label does not itself grant or remove PS Plus benefits; check the game’s own access terms. |
| Is it a rotating selection? | Yes. PlayStation offers new titles to claim each month. | Not by virtue of being free-to-play. Availability is determined by the game and Store listing. |
PlayStation’s US PS Plus plans and FAQs describe Monthly Games as titles members can claim each month and say they remain accessible while the membership is active. Its multiplayer support guidance distinguishes most purchased games from most free-to-play games: PS Plus is generally needed to play online in purchased games, while free-to-play titles generally do not require it. Exceptions are possible, so check the listing for the specific game.
Do you need PS Plus to play free-to-play games online?
For most free-to-play games, no. PlayStation names Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that generally do not require PS Plus, including for online play. That rule is not universal: PlayStation says to check the game’s Store page to confirm whether PS Plus is required for online multiplayer.
This is separate from the rule for most games you buy. Whether purchased on disc or through the PlayStation Store, most games require PS Plus for online multiplayer. The individual listing is the best check when you are unsure.

What happens to a Monthly Game when you cancel PS Plus?
Claiming a Monthly Game does not mean you own it outright. PlayStation says claimed PS Plus games remain accessible for as long as you are an active member. If your membership ends, you lose access; claiming the title earlier does not make it a permanent purchase.
How Monthly Games differ from the Game Catalog
The Game Catalog is another PS Plus benefit, but it is not the same as Monthly Games. Monthly Games are included with Essential, Extra, and Premium. The Game Catalog is included with Extra and Premium, and its titles can have end dates and leave the catalog. A game appearing in that catalog is therefore not the same as a Monthly Game you claimed.

Which PS Plus plan includes Monthly Games?
All three current PS Plus tiers—Essential, Extra, and Premium—include Monthly Games and online multiplayer. Extra adds the Game Catalog. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming; streaming availability and requirements depend on location and current regional terms.
For readers in the United States, PlayStation’s plan page says PS4 games will be added only intermittently starting in January 2026. That is a US-specific, time-sensitive note, not a guarantee about other regions or a promise of a particular monthly lineup.

Which option fits what you want to play?
- You want to try a game without an upfront purchase: Look for free-to-play games in the Store. Most do not require PS Plus for online play, but verify the listing.
- You want to claim the monthly PS Plus selection: Any of the three tiers includes Monthly Games. You need an active membership to keep access to claimed titles.
- You want an on-demand library of games: Extra or Premium includes the Game Catalog. Check whether a particular title has an end date.
- You already own a game and want to play online: Most purchased games require PS Plus for online multiplayer; confirm the specific game’s requirement in the Store.
These categories can overlap in practical ways: a game might be free-to-play, while another title is offered as a Monthly Game or appears in a subscription catalog. The label that matters depends on what you are checking—upfront price, subscription access, or online multiplayer requirements. Store availability and entitlements may vary by game, region, and time.
